That's what they're doing in the cities now anyhow. It's just a blocks long line of cars everywhere, idling, inching forward, waiting for the car in front of them to move. It's not the traffic lights that are creating

I also learned recently that if you search for a quoted string in gmail and there are no matches it will just show a few partial matches, instead of just telling you there were no hits. The google behavior you describe got so annoying for

'The Fletcher checksum cannot distinguish between blocks of all 0 bits and blocks of all 1 bits.' For some reason, I find it fascinating to read about such a fundamental limitation. But I understand it doesn't apply much in

After Florida 2000, a lot of us take our sweet time double, and triple checking that we're marking the right box, and, in the case of paper ballots, very carefully filling in the box fully, but not too full.

"We need to stop making garbage, not try to clean up the flow that we make." We need both actually. Stopping the manufacture of junk plastic will not cause the oceans to become cleaner. It will just stop them from getting worse.

I don’t think I’ve seen this “primary” and “secondary” caregiver distinction before. Seems like bullshit to me.

I live in a city that is in crazy high demand. Prices climb 10% a year. Demand is huge. There are two vacant homes on my block. (And another one two blocks away) But not because no one wants to live there. But because of stupid practices

I got to visit LIGO in Louisiana a few years back. I remember they lamented that it was not as remote as they really wanted. The detector picked up nearby hunting activity, and logging activity in the woods. And they had to shut down mea

There are a lot of city and town public records. But once they are online and searchable and cross reference able with databases and APIs they become a new kind of public. There’s a lot of data showing this. So maybe it’s public, but not

There was a similar game with the F/A-18. It had a 250 page manual. I read that whole thing. It was probably the most I read when I was 14.

That’s different then. You aren’t asking for someone to solve a problem for you. You are just paying them to perform a task. I’m referring to the issue addressed in the article about problem solving.

This sort of goes to something I learned as an auto mechanic. When you have a problem, describe the symptoms as objectively as possible. Don’t say, “I need my tires balanced.” Or you might get your tires balanced but the problem persists.

Intent matters. Your example of flipping the script would only be comparable if the manufacturer engineered the car to fail the test. VW built their car to produce a specific test result to get buyers to buy the car. It fits the descripti

The VW stuff wasn't simply about fuel efficiency it was about emissions output. I think this was the video where a guy basically reverse engineered the system. (Starts around 40m in) https://media.ccc.de/v/32c3-7

In some cities you would need a permit to replace an outlet. And only licensed electricians are allowed to get permits. In some cities bad wiring jobs don’t just burn you own house down, it’ll take the neighbors house with it. So it’s no
