From the Berkeley paper on Facebook: Nonetheless, large jobs are important too. Over 80% of the IO and over 90% of cluster cycles are consumed by less than 10% of the largest jobs (7% of the largest jobs in the Facebook cluster). These lar

What are you worried about? Both Loren and Marco are independent developers who need to put food on the table. At some point you need to make sustainable decisions; sometimes that means leaving VC-funded companies, and sometimes that means

As an alternative currency, Bitcoin is very, very illegal in various countries. For example, I believe the Federal Reserve Act in the US outlaws all non-Reserve currency.

The article is sorely mistaken: a job posting that says "Kaggle participation will give you an advantage" does not mean Kaggle provides "essential metric[s]." That's just one example of the article overstating Kaggle's case. Also love the i

Agreed. In conversations with data scientists looking to hire, we've never discussed Kaggle aside from "wow they reeeeeally focus on that evaluation metric." In fact, our conversations quickly turn to the Netflix Prize, where first place wo

Congrats, Adam! Do we have performance information yet, even on some basic, common use cases? Also, the docs mention EJML as the backend for Saddle's data structures--do you have any thoughts on using EJML?

This is a disappointing criticism of someone who presents some very interesting ideas. Morozov is definitely guilty of tearing down some absurd strawmen, but that doesn't invalidate his criticisms of, say, SV's "solutionist" culture.

Many of the comments in here are of the form "hey well of COURSE you love startups you work at one of the most successful startups in existence." I think that's a poor representation of the talk's main points. He actually provides a level c

There is a huge gap between my disagreeing with clearly sexist based policies and saying that sexism, even so called benevolent sexism is a bad thing, and your claiming I am misogynistic or that my point of view is insane, or even idiotic.

It's easy to game your answer as an interviewee though. HN actually had a post a while back about someone who "interviewed" for a living while on unemployment; by the time he was done, he had mastered pretending to think deeply about the an

So there's one damning thing in Broder's review: the confirmation of his range anxiety as the Model S sits on a flatbed. Tesla explicitly refutes that point by saying Broder ignored warnings against leaving Norwich. Also, I mean, come on: r
