A small plug for our company, Angaza Design; integration with various mobile money providers, such as M-Pesa, Airtel, and a bunch of others is one of our core strengths. If you're interested in learning more about how they work, and yo

FYI, for those who want to write cross-platform GUI apps but prefer to avoid C++ (even the mildly nicer Qt flavor...), there are alpha-quality go bindings for QML. https://github.com/go-qml/qml

The current Ubuntu Phone image does not have any Amazon integration at all. When in desktop mode, you will be plugged into A/C power.

The cost of my team's engineering time over the next multiple months is not covered by the $32M. I do not think you will be surprised.

We plan on an unlocked phone, with an unlocked bootloader. Unfortunately, for the planned volume, we won't have much influence with the SoC vendor, and therefore, it is highly doubtful you will see open graphics / radio firmware.

We've come a long, long way since WebTop. Our code runs fairly well on the Nexus 4 today, and through much dogfooding, we've learned that RAM is the biggest limiting factor in performance. So when (if?!) Edge ships with 4GB of RAM

Nice suggestion. I'll bring it up with the team. Off the cuff though, I'd say the ideal backer is someone excited about open platforms that push the boundary of what we think of computing today. Arjan and team[1] proved that a 5-s

Yes, we have collective centuries of hardware experience. No, we do not think a phone is a collection of parts.

Manufacturing is expensive. The vast majority of the $32M goes simply to manufacturing. The remainder covers taxes, fees, shipping, certification, and returns. It does not cover the cost of the development team's time.

My team dogfoods Ubuntu for Android every single day on the Nexus 4, and I'll say that it's performant enough to be a daily driver as a desktop replacement. Edge has 4GB of RAM planned, and will run even better than the N4.

Ubuntu Edge is orthogonal to existing commercial discussions with OEMs and operators. It's a premier, demonstration platform, not a mass market device.

Reselling someone else's developer phone from last year isn't exactly the marketing message we're going for. Edge is meant to be a premium product, not just another "me too". Unrelated: if you simply want to test dr

You keep putting up strawmen. Show me the desktop Linux equivalent of Android, not Cyanogenmod. It doesn't exist - and you can measure that failure with any number of metrics. If Ubuntu can achieve that type of success and protect the fre

The entire reason why desktop Linux has been a failure is exactly because it does not fit the needs of most people. And for that audience, "shiny" is equally important as "featureful". In the modern marketplace, you can't choose either/or.

This is a fundamental misunderstanding of Ubuntu's raison d'etre, which is to bring Free (libre) software to the world. Except the rest of the (consumer) world doesn't value libre as a first-class feature. They want the shiny. The way we ge

Much of the software in Ubuntu is available on ARM today. If you have an Ubuntu ARM device (say, you are running the desktop on a Panda board), you can launch Ubuntu Software Centre and see for yourself. For a less pretty view (and one that
