I guess the main difference between now and then is that we are starting to have an idea of what is going to be possible and already see “dark uses” of technology happening (e.g., surveillance in china) whereas beforehand we were clueless a

Let‘s make a short thought experiment... imagine Superman just came to earth and has perfect memory and the possibility trace your (and everyone else‘s) every footstep with his superhuman hearing and vision. Would that require new laws to d

Why would someone downvote this comment? If you don’t like spideroak [1] that’s fine but downvoting for an informative comment seems childish. 1: https://spideroak.com/ Another e2e encrypted storage solution is keybase.io.

Spideroak one. Use them for quite some time... never had any real trouble but I use it more as a backup service tbh. Customer support is pretty good though!

I would argue that this is just a product of capitalistic logic in action. You see an opportunity and want to profit as this is how you are SUPPOSED to play the game. Look at all the things that Amazon is trying to do to make a profit... No

My bet is that as soon as there are sensible arguments to counteract your counter arguments, you will come up with new counter arguments. To resolve this cycle let me propose a radical idea: Tell us when you would change your mind! Then we

What’s really interesting for me is that you really seem to have a disgust for people trying to add restrictions to “open source” software with the goal of keeping it open but seem to be totally fine with for profit enterprises adding restr

Thank you for the comment! I think it sums up some important critical questions very nicely. While I am happy to see talented people working on important topics like this, I am really sad to see that this seems to be a for profit effort. If

What does capitalism actually mean, though? Do you mean capitalism in the US, Canada, France, Germany, China? All have private property, profit oriented companies and markets... It’s such a broad term it’s probably completely useless and it

I agree with the general sentiment of your statement. Isn’t it ironic that the strongest defenders of capitalism are the ones which are trying the hardest (and often succeeding) to monopolize (a niche of) the market? While I would not argue

I have had similar ideas and would love to propose something even more radical. Treat laws like theories and model the expected/desired effects that a law should have at certain time points/intervals. If the observed outcomes dive

Yeah, you have point. I am certainly not in favor of large energy companies stealing their way around paying for the long-term containment of spent fuel rods for example. People should be held accountable for the damage they do and the wast

Disclaimer: I am not really pro- or con- nuclear energy but try to keep an open mind. How does what you are saying not apply to any other technology? Cars are “save” but kill more people than all nuclear power plants and accidents combined.

To me the article is somewhat missing the most interesting point of the whole discussion and that’s the impact that the money is having when it is spend. Let me be a little provocative :) While a great coffee can be a pleasurable experience

If you look at the video I posted at least one professor seems to think otherwise and I kind of find his arguments at least worthy to consider. Corporations will by nature have place an emphasis on pleasing owners, which in the case of coop

Yeah, thank you for bringing up UBI! I think UBI is an interesting development and seems like a good part of the solution given our current situation. However, it adresses inequality mostly in terms of redistribution of resources and not re

I would argue that today there are many oligopoly type situations where there is actually not too much choice to go around, especially if you are limited in terms of moving about. In these cases unionization or other types of collective act

I totally agree that there are two sides to this coin. On the one hand, you need to involve or support people who are negatively affected by changes (e.g., unions, co-ops, etc.) and, on the other hand, there needs to be effective regulation

Sure that was the whole point, to broaden the discussion beyond tending the symptoms and trying to get at the causes. An interesting idea could be to use a union or similar vehicle to start a co-op. Or start to strive for more democratic pr

To make this discussion maybe a little bit more solution oriented, what would be your solution to problems of labor mistreatment? Or do you suggest that nothing like that exists? I recently came across an interesting talk by Richard Wolff a

I am really confused by the use of “elites” in recent times. What is actually meant by the term? Am I an elite if I have finished my PhD? Do I need to be in the 0.1%? It’s such a broad term that it basically becomes useless as it means tota
