Congrats on getting to a situation that works for you, but I would gently suggest that having to custom-patch suexec of all things might not be the best way to approach a long-term solution. I don't know how that aspect of the solutio

Looks like a great upgrade to the Kindle Paperwhite, in particular the return of physical page turn buttons. But my biggest wish--native epub support--still isn't there :(

I recently wrote on my blog about the cost of having a benign mole removed. I got so angry when I heard the cost of that simple procedure that I went online and calculated the cost to do it in Colombia, where I have some family. Long stor

Wikipedia believes faithful reproductions (i.e., scans) of 2-d public domain work to also be in the public domain [1]. If that interpretation is correct, then the Met's licensing restrictions--at least for their scans of paintings and

Not in this case, I don't think. If there's a way to break encryption, even in the smallest way, then it's not really encrypted, and calling it "good enough" does a disservice to people who actually expect it to

That's the ballpark I figured in, and that's why I'm just using Crashplan. $5/month for unlimited storage, but with "encryption" in scare quotes. Paying literally 50x that for Tarsnap is just not practical, s

Hit the nail on the head with the pricing model. I really want a backup solution like Tarsnap that encrypts my data client-side and has an OSS client. I'm even fine with it being a Unixy command-line tool. But I have almost 1TB--a l

I read this a long time ago and I can't recommend it enough. It does a good job of introducing the concepts of stoicism and defending the philosophy from our modern assumptions of the word. A very good read. The word 'stoicism&#

Google Maps' killer feature for me is getting directions for public transport. Finding out how to get from point A to point B using buses and subways is invaluable. It doesn't seem like any Android OSM client has that yet... too

On my wishlist is some kind of basic Google Voice number integration. Since messages are encrypted then clearly we can't use the GV web interface, which is fine, since what interests me is the "one phone number" feature of G

For the most part it's either epub or mobi at this point in the ebook game, with the rare occasional pdf. Epub and mobi are essentially interchangeable thanks to Calibre, and if you need PDF then you probably need more complex formatt

Pretty often. Yes you can use mb_* functions everywhere but not all string functions have an mb_* counterpart, and forget just once and you risk blowing up the entire rest of the request. Not to mention times when you have to use a 3rd pa

That's a false dichotomy. If the NSA disappeared tomorrow we would not all be dead thanks to terrorists or whatever. Instead, the question is one of acceptable risk. The concept of risk is something the American public has seemed to

This is FUD. Anecdotally, I managed to browse coverage on the healthcare.gov site a few days ago, and the cheapest plan offered is about what I currently pay for individual health insurance, but a much, much, better plan than what I have.
