This seems like government working well. An overzealous governmental employee denies a valid document, for whatever confused or malicious reason. Denied person contacts their congress representative. The congress rep gets the issue fixed. Y

So clearly there will be some delay in between when brand inertia is still going and competitors haven't caught up, but it does look like Walmart is stepping up its online retail business, so I have hope that Amazon won't maintain

I really wish I agreed with your characterization, but I don't. What I see as prototypical identity politics is something like the Why Can't We Hate Men article the Washington Post published ( https://www.washingtonpost.

Correct. As a study stands flawed, there is no real takeaway. However, a flawed study does not mean the original conclusion is false. Merely that the evidence the study provides for it cannot bolster it. But now the study is part of the soc

What do we do when the 1 out of 100th conspiracy theory turns out to be true? Just months ago there were massive conspiracy theorizing about the first lady's absence over a period of days. Should that discussion have just been shut dow

It is because on twitter, your favorite tech person can mostly tweet boring tech stuff, but will be unable to resist, like the rest of us on twitter, retweeting the inflammatory extremist tweets when they show up in their own feed. I am mor

I think it's the retweets that are to blame for this. When you can act on your impulse with the simple click of a button, which in effect spreads misinformation or a negative attitude, then you have problem. Twitter became successful b

Zhang is an outlier. From what I followed when his proof came out, there were actually very similar ideas being developed by Terry Tao at UCLA and by a PhD student at Oxford. The sort of places you'd expect. And IIRC, Zhang actually co

I think we have 50 years worth of data, at the very, in the modern era to give at least some sort of evaluation of the usefulness of the money we are spending on math research. Yeah, it's hard to quantify the value of research. I want

Something like the Fast Fourier Transform has had a much significant impact on society than a proof of the incomputability of the Busy Beaver function. Saying that Turing and Church "invented computing" is too vague of a justifica

Exactly. Modern pure math is extremely abstract. I want careful, level-headed arguments justifying research in swath of pure math fields. Give me numbers, give me details. Not just vague anecdotes. It may be worth the cost, but I don't

That really stinks. I am curious, do you see as cultural restrictions on the N-word as a way to make a sort of verbal "black space?" Do you think it is appropriate to counter white spaces by making black spaces or do you think it

To me, if you want reparations, economic ones would be more helpful. As strict as the current cultural enforcement of the word is, I see it as only a way to divide and not a way for black culture to be part of all America.

You make fair points. The biggest issue here is YouTube's recurrent communication problem. Blender and MIT Open Courseware, I am almost sure, were blindsided by this change. They would have worked out a plan ahead of time otherwise. Ju
