Here would be my guess: * GPU programming (GPUs have consistently kept up with Moore-like laws) * FPGA/ASIC design (hard but price for all of these is dropping rapidly, so becoming more accessible) * Bitcoin/cryptocurrency related

I'm shocked there's so much push back on this here. This was written in 2019 but it applies even more so today. All the recent advances in AI for the past decade have, as a base requirement, massive amounts of compute. Not a proof

Sorry to reply to my own thread but here's something that actually might change this equation: AI. How can AI help create the social networking site we actually want to see? Language models to filter out hateful content? Boost content

In my opinion, this is a tarpit idea [0]. It's not that it's impossible, it's that the user expectations are high, the marginal utility of the new features is negligible and, even if you had a vastly superior product, you wou

Yeah, so maybe it's a lot murkier then we all understand. From a previous response, it looks like this case sidestepped the issue by ruling the photograph was not original enough so didn't fall under copyright protection (I guess?

I guess one way to look at it is, if the original work (the photograph) was in the public domain and the derivative work was created (the painting), would the artist who created the painting still be allowed to claim copyright over it. But

This seems to me to be a pretty clear case of copyright infringement. As others have pointed out, looking at the picture side by side it's nearly a copy, with details of the neck shadow, hair placement and clothing kept almost verbatim

The basic idea is to use the distance of the gliders to encode information, so when they hit each other allows for an embedding of a Turing machine. I'm no expert here but some basic ideas are that some small number of gliders (two?) c

My hypothesis is that we have a collective knowledge that we tend to forget and that the new generation often doesn't understand, or takes for granted, the foundations of the infrastructure we use and sometimes tries to apply concepts

This smacks of forgetfulness. I wonder what the age is of the OP. As others have pointed out, *nix systems (Linux in particular) are rife with DSLs. Not just C but (c|ba|k|tc|z)sh, sed, awk, grep, to name a few. Each of these tools has it&#

It will be a hellscape if copyright law is extended to include artistic style. Copyright is already overreaching and broad. To extend it further would be disastrous for the public and for the small to mid tier artist. I could imagine that i

Personally, I think this is the best solution I've heard. It still has problems in that copyright holders need to be proactive and it punishes work that can't pay the copyright extension fee that doesn't become popular until
