I like both, but Vim's modal nature and the consequently far fewer control combinations make it much faster for editing text. On the other hand, emacs' language-specific modes and built-in repl-in-the-editor support is awesome.

I would recommend some MOOC's for a good, pressure-free re-introduction. Udacity has an algebra class. I assume it's really good. The Norvig course I took there was excellent. Also check out Coursera. https://www.udacity.com/courses
