Not quite the same, but Google provided Spotlight-like software for Windows, and shown some local results when you were searching the big web. This was over ten years ago.

I know there are different gradations of slavery, but I'd take working for food and shelter over fourteen months of rice and water. Especially seeing as eleven of fourteen men outright died on rice and water.

There are multiple text adventure games where you have to figure out the game's mechanics before you can do anything, and of course you can't just wave the mouse around and click on some targets. E.g. (I myself haven't gotten

Sounds like it would be much easier to reincorporate in a neighbour county. I don't know, of course, if the US law gives a damn about you not being located there.

Afaik 16px only relatively lately became the ‘default size’ on the web. I'm not even sure that ‘css pixels’ were a thing ten years ago. But it's possible.

A side-effect of Windows pinning fonts to pixels is that you can't get arbitrary font sizes and scaling. E.g. I had to use “font-size: 82%” in CSS, because at 80% the text looked bad (pinned to the wrong pixel, and possibly became blur

Java literally runs on smart cards, including SIM cards: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Java_Card — and did so since the 90s. My guess is, applets were crashy for different reasons than CPU speed.

Gotta say, I can see the dissonance there: you use the specific ‘name’ for the country, but the two continents for the language.

Try searching for any life knowledge on the English web without specifying the country. E.g. home repairs: I'm pretty sure Brits don't live in those funny cardboard houses. The underlying distribution doesn't matter when ther

Considering that the English-language web is almost completely occupied by USians, it would be hilarious if they were required to finally declare that they speak ‘American’ and not ‘English’.

IIRC the ‘History of English’ podcast mentions that pronunciation like ‘hwat’ was the norm either in Old English or before that. Then it changed, and the spelling was changed accordingly.
