The ‘Hacker News Enhancement Suite’ browser extension highlights new replies on the comment pages, including the ‘threads’/‘your comments’ page. Still a ‘polling’ workflow, but better than nothing. Also adds a few useful links in the h

Just recently I brought a Mac-formatted exfat flash drive to a print shop, where it failed at being read on a Windows box. I doubt it that they're using WinME.

Perhaps the dimensions of someone's barn were a factor.

BTW, the most ridiculous instance of this that I've met is when a game fiddled with the OS-global volume when I adjusted the volume in the game's options.

My guess is that icons distinguish between local devices and Airplay stuff.

The wheel does work when just hovering over many sliders, at least on Mac and in Firefox. However, whether that works in any particular app or a site is a gamble. In some apps and sites with a specific purpose the wheel is often mapped more

Alas Teams is far from the only app to control the global volume, and it doesn't happen only in Windows.

That's so hilariously misguided, it's like some student's experimental pet project. It gives zero visual hint as to how to use it (i.e. ‘affordances’). From the looks, I'd guess that it's a horizontal slider with th

In fact, if you consider the in-universe explanation of ‘holodeck creates fake matter that can't actually exist and function outside of the holodeck’, then things may possibly be even more impressive. So, presumably people discovered s

If you ever try to follow what a holodeck can and can't do, you easily see that few of our technology predictions can even hold a candle to it. There's some finger-waggling in-universe to explain away the discrepancy, but the ‘fac

There's a book ‘Shaman’ by Kim Stanley Robinson, who's said to do a lot of research for his writing. In one scene of the book, a man goes into a cave to paint such images. Well, when his fires go out, he then spends three days gro

IIRC Debian have attempted to track installations of packages, and likewise discovered that people don't like it. (Pretty much 100% predictable by now: the issue is hot, and complaining is easy—so it will be done.)

BTW, since there are links to mp3s here, you could probably dump them into a playlist like the radios. Browsers do support media controls these days, but that likely excludes the prev/next buttons on most sites—like in this case. My pe

I'd say play sombre suspenseful scapes when nothing much's going on, since you're likely pondering how to proceed with your world domination plans. Then funky techno action music when the execution phase commences.

In addition to other licensing gotchas, a ton of SO snippets are copied wholesale from elsewhere—docs or blog posts. So it's pretty likely that the poster can't license them in the first place because they never checked the source

As I recently learned from semi-random Wikipedia reading, Sony didn't exactly come up with the idea of these kits by itself. Sony bought Psygnosis in '93 and had it develop some early PS1 hits—but it seems the dev still had some f

I'm talking about transfer in the other direction, or bidirectional one. Because people fill the infoboxes way more than they do Wikidata.

Alas infoboxes on Wikipedia often have more info. Particularly, in the case of cultural phenomena people are frequently eager to populate the infoboxes. Perhaps some kind of synchronization would be feasible, where with standardized infobox
