What is a "motion-sensitive sleep alarm"? One of those widgets that wakes you up at the most advantageous part of your sleep cycle that falls within a given bracket of time? ISTR seeing one of those a while back, in production, wh

The only part there that seems like it's actually hard (ooh er) is encoding information about the content of a given video or image file; I don't see any better way to do that than tagging by hand, which is going to take a while f

> "Hacker News" doesn't allow even basic HTML? I think that's to try to keep the focus on content rather than presentation, and also because parsing user-submitted HTML to pick out the safe bits is a pain in the neck.

It reads a lot better in a column width which can't be measured in positive integer miles. Unmaximize the window and you no longer need the color-cuing extension at all. (And the people responsible for the BeeLine Reader website know

I'm no scientist, but off the top of my head, I'd say you would start by finding a group of women who experience simulator sickness with the Rift, and a given simulation, at a significantly higher rate than do men. Then you'd

Normal mapping provides exactly the sort of shape-from-shading cue boyd describes. Stereopsis isn't required for normal mapping to be beneficial; indeed, in the fifteen years since boyd did the work she summarizes in her article, norma

It would be nice if the article under discussion had anything to do with the technology that goes into the Rift, but, as I detail elsewhere in this thread and in an as-yet-unmoderated comment on boyd's blog, it appears to be based on r

I think men in the industry would be more willing to default to your more rational, and also more charitable, approach, had they not so much experience of feminists telling them they are evil. After a while, anyone will get gun-shy. Exagge

This is bad enough on its own, but especially disturbing in light of the blog post linked by calibraxis, elsewhere in this thread, in which Dryden advocates 1950s-style industry blacklisting.

Private lists of toxic people are one thing. Public, crowdsourced lists of people who should not be permitted to earn a livelihood, in the industry where they have built their entire careers, are quite another. The disclaimers of advocacy,

Oh, hey, Ashe Dryden! Last I ran into her, she was busily advocating an overt hiring blacklist because some people on 4chan made fun of a blog post. I'm surprised to find her quoted in such a relatively even-handed article on the subje

But the attacker didn't yet control the DNS when he sent the link to the exploit; he needed the exploit in order to compromise the router and put the DNS hijack in place. So I'm not sure how the hell it worked.

That was more or less what I had in mind. On the other hand, it might be more cost-efficient in general to design the cylinders to connect endwise and form a hexagon; it'd increase travel time for the station's inhabitants, but re
