I think I would just start with indexing the latest Common Crawl WET files along with a server and a couple of Exos X20 20TB drives. Wondering out loud if there's a crawl that will produce real-time updates via common news outlets..

How does someone economically store tens if thousands of terabytes of data needed for the indexes of a large scale search engine? And have the large server instances (lots of ram)?

If I have to choose a time to stop masking, between now and my death, I'm not going to choose my death. I will stop wearing one much sooner. I hate the muffled voices. I can't see anyone smile. It's dehumanizing.

If my time, your time, Chris’s time is going to be occupied, compensation is normal. Software comes with bug fixes, dependency upgrades, support, infrastructure. All of this takes someone’s time. Which should be compensated. I can’t argue a

How can engineers maintain software indefinitely for a fixed price? I doubt you’d accept a fixed bid project and agree to bug fixes for another ten years. I don’t think that’s a fair trade.

With any software, if it's inaccessible because of pricing and your circumstances, definitely reach out to the authors and explain your situation. You will only get in life what you ask for. They may say no, but you owe it to yourself

I guess we’ll agree to disagree on the sentiment. Software maintenance never ends. And programmers just like every one else, need to eat. Assuming even a modest $50/hr rate, you’d chew through $250 just trying to get the team invite fu

Would you attend the game if it were 11 people? Because that's what you do every time you drive. 11 crash fatalities per 100,000 people. https://www.iihs.org/topics/fatality-statistics/detail/state...

Those (likely) aren't your odds. Without knowing your specific background, your numbers are probably much less. E.g. ages 0-17, there's been 644 deaths. Across a cohort with ~75,000,000 people. https://www.cdc.gov/

Yes, density. And scaling of services. But scaling issues should subside over time. The U.S. spends 3.8 trillion a year on healthcare. Scaling issues five years out? Less acceptable. 20 years out? Unacceptable.
