A colleague of mine in chemistry gave his thoughts on AI for protein folding recently: “things keep getting better, but they’re nowhere close to being good”. I think part of the issue at play here is the cost of confirming success, not simp

Just like on Facebook, the ads are doing much more than ‘paying to run’ the platform. And moreover, why would YouTube do anything but continue to increase the amount of ad content? It directly translates to more cash and profit. Same goes f

I totally agree with you, but I also notice the slow but steady increase in ad content before, between, below all YouTube videos, that also seem to call back to my preferences, feelings, tastes, past interactions, etc. The question I always

From all visible metrics, sex and social activity are plummeting precipitously across the developed world——lower rates of sex, lower sales of condoms, higher marriage age, lower birth rate, more suicide, higher rates of antisocial mental di

Great article, all your contributions seem pretty solid. Are you a hobbyist or professional in the post structuralism world?

The fact that it’s a smaller territory means that effects that would even out in larger territories don’t apply. I.e. it’s a relative effect. Here’s an example: suppose a large retirement community of Chinese immigrants exists in Hong Kong,

But isn’t that the irony that we’ve been reading news stories about lab grown meat for 20 years, while the real breakthrough product (Beyond Meat) is basically a souped up veggie patty? I feel that when we assume technology as the root of p

Interesting comment! I’m not the author of the article, but I know them. I think her perspective is that we are free to imagine arcades within the web construct, flaneuring through the images and ideas in an ambulatory way, trying to grasp

I don’t understand — what’s the control variable here? How can they claim the algorithm has a deradicalizing effect without showing that people became less radical? Also, the raw number of recommendations is misleading — as long as 1 in 100

This is almost hilariously bad thinking. It’s the VC filter bubble turned into a kooky VC marketing buzz phrase designed to continue the VC filter bubble. Meanwhile, A16Z’s numerous investments in ‘zeitgeist’ fitting blockchain technologies

In a bubble, your terms and leverage as a founder are better, including self-comp, voting shares, and funding runway. Raising money is always risky (hence the barbell), but you have unlimited optionality compared to a desk jockey.

This. Clearly this has to be the stable state for these services. A taxi is naturally free to operate in a way they see fit (finding narrow strategies and routes) while an Uber is constrained by a routing system. If you find a taxi, you can

Take the barbell strategy — make sure to exit any less liquid investments (e.g. stock), and then extract capital from the bubble by raising money. When the market crashes, use your cash to purchase cheap assets and/or failing companies

Mesosphere's DNS implementation ( https://github.com/mesosphere/mesos-dns ) helps address that problem. You can use dns routing to create an internal storage or implement a cache that routes cache misses to an exter
