The leading cause of death is cardiovascular disease. >90% of these cases can be attributed to an overweight population. It's not an easy problem to solve, but there has to be a way to fix it. Lots of calorie counting apps, activi

It's not too difficult to make your own PACS, there's even open-source software for this. However, you need to be compliant and this usually means obtaining FDA approval of any device you want to install on the hospital network.

Yes and no. I spoke with an Epic engineer recently and he confirmed that Epic is still a front-end to HL7 databases. With that said, many PACS are adopting the WADO standard ( https://www.research.ibm.com/haifa/projects&

Yes, massive increases in efficiency. A radiologist can read anywhere from 50-100 images per day (depending on modality CXR/MR/CT/etc). Voice dictation is ubiquitous and residents are trained from the beginning on how to navi

I'm excited for the applications of deep learning in radiology. I'll be starting radiology residency in a couple years (intern year first). Can someone explain whether this solves the problem of identifying multiple pathologies wi

Half of machine learning is data wrangling. Python is so easy to use and elegant, that it feels good when you're using it. When was the last time you enjoyed data manipulation in R/Java/C/etc?

I actually think this is very relevant, just unknown! It's something I always wondered about Vi, the ESC key is just out of reach of the home row, making it a strange choice for a fundamental operation.

This is entirely dependent on the program. My undergrad had few set-theoretic math classes. Sure we had to take discrete math and combinatorics, but this kind of notation was lacking. I learned it by way of double-majoring in mathematics. C

I think it's fair to say at this point that people aren't buying manual for the fuel economy, but for the fun and control provided by the interface. I think if you take a look at cars that come only in manual in 2015, they take a

Correct me if I'm wrong, but this seems like a convex optimization problem, assuming you know the sizes of the boxes and volume to pack them in. I think you could define a set of equality/inequality constraints and solve the probl

Python is outstanding for nearly every purpose I've thrown at it, and I was a strong Java developer. Now if anyone asks me if they should learn R/Matlab/Java/C, I say "Sure, but learn Python first."

I have mixed feelings about this. If the company owned the ecosystem - e.g. a Microsoft Surface or an Apple MacBook, would we expect them to support a different operating system? Albeit, MacBooks do support Windows. I think it's fair t

Anecdotal, personal, and completely my opinion, but my parent's entire life savings is $750,000. That's about how much Mike Markkula invested in early Apple ($250,000 in 1977 dollars adjusted for inflation). I like this figure bec
