Fun fact - the website used for submitting visas to come to India still uses marquee.

This sounds similar to some of the concepts in the robotics framework I'm writing. It's pretty powerful to be able to separate out the transport data has from the serialization it has.

Not sure if this is what GP was getting at, but in games a shared pointer (or similar custom resource handle) to something like a texture can be very useful - you want to share resources between objects in the scene so that you don't l

ROS is really great for prototyping. Agree that it has some major issues for production.

I'm working on one right now, no public code yet - http://basisrobotics.tech (well, we - myself and cofounder) It's serialization independent (integrating a new serializer is super easy, you can even use ROS messages i

If you _maybe_ need to share ownership, the second is a little pessimistic - you always increase the ref count.

You'd want it to be the exact same hardware as in production, for one.

This is really neat, I’ll have to try it out. It won’t catch all classes of errors though - won’t each call to pause() cause a synchronization between the threads and hide some data race issues? maybe this is a nonissue in Rust.

Certain compiler settings do produce a warning there, yeah. It’s annoying but an easy fix/habit to change.

Yes, at runtime. Compiling CUDA doesn’t require a GPU, though, and doesn’t really use “parallel computing”. I think CUDA via clang gets this right and will produce the same build every time - it was purely an NVCC issue.

NVCC CUDA builds were nondeterministic last time I checked, it made certain things (trying to get very clever with generating patches) difficult. This was also hampered by certain libraries (maybe GTSAM?) wanting to write __DATE__ somewhere

When I went ~5 years ago, I was completely unable to use the taxi apps due to lack of Korean bank acct. This lead to being unable to even hail a cab at times - they mostly seemed to pick up fares from the apps. At one point I managed to get

Well-architected + well designed means you can go back later and fix the code if the project survives. I'm hitting this personally right now - the amount of code I can write is dwarfed by the amount of features needed to get something

I've written tests around multithreaded code, but they typically catch them in a statistical manner - either running a bit of code many times over to try and catch an edge condition, or by overloading the system to persuade rarer order

The linked page has benchmarks - I'd have to go dig into godbolt to see why it's faster. The standard library can actually auto-parallelize, but you have to opt in (see the ExecutionPolicy argument). Edit: I don't know how to

We now have return std::reduce(x.begin(), x.end()); Which is a little cleaner and is even faster (compiler is free to do the additions in any order). https://en.cppreference.com/w/cpp/algorithm/red
