Your analogy is pretty precise up to the "naked" part. I've heard pretty bad things about Getty Images from their customers (much more expensive than competitors, much worse customer service.) Naked I've never heard...

You can't program a brain the way you can program computers. You can't program NNs either, im that sense. They have their place, I work for a company shipping them now with hw acceleration. Let's ignore the role of RAM here a

SQL is not Prolog though. SQL, at least the parts mapping to relational algebra, is not Turing-complete, Prolog is. I'm pretty sure Prolog not specifying an execution strategy would mean that your program terminates under one interpret

First impression, could be misinformed, but I'll bite. Since a hardware circuit is a recursive function that takes a state of the hardware and produces a new state, starting from an initial state (and so is the universe where the initi

Not only are FPGAs as far from the ideal of "computation as reduction" expressed in the paper as they could possibly be, but they're the hardest machine to fit into this sort of a paradigm. The typical CPU will run functional

Then it wasn't deduplication. I swear it was a NetApp file server, two files, one modified by a program that logged the change, the other getting the same bits as the first, the time stamps were completely identical. Dedup was just a g

This works at higher levels of abstraction, too. For instance, NetApp filers have a deduplication feature, where identical files are detected and stored once instead of several times. When one of the files is changed, supposedly a copy on w

What example workload cannot be implemented efficiently if your cores communicate using coherent caches, but can be implemented efficiently if they work in some other way?

All multi-core Intel chips have cache coherence. Intel might not have incorporated the paper's approach to scaleable cache coherence because they don't have a substrate to put 512 x86 cores on.

You don't store it in main memory, you store it in the directory, aka snoop filter, or whatever you want to call it. The paper actually estimated the overhead and came up with the number 2% for 512 cores, not that high.
