I'm one of the authors. We wrote it in the summer of 1999 during the Pennsylvania Governor's School for the Sciences at Carnegie Mellon. Getting access to a Cray T3E supercomputer as a high schooler was a beautiful thing. :)

OK someone has to call bullshit on this. I started as a lowly software engineer straight out of school at the same time. I started at 70K ... Joel started Fog Creek in 2000, but began programming professionally much earlier than that.
