That's a nice vision. However there are other issues than security ones. Some stuff is not allowed, like for example doing some grown-up things (sorry to be so vague). Self-publishing only works if a third party efficiently controls fo

No need to be negative ("utterly ridiculous"). And you seem to have misunderstood me. It's not about Apple locking something, its about Apple software on the hardware of your Asahi Linux system.

Follow-up: Now I am afraid the victory of Asahi running Linux on Apple Silicon systems is only superficial. Apple still has a tight grip on how hardware is ran on a level lower than Linux. If I am wrong, please point out. I would be happy.

I have taken the time to watch the talk. What I have learnt (to my dismay): Complex hardware has their own software, like IME, but they do important things you can't turn off. The danger in this: hardware-based exploits. In other words

Let me paraphrase more generally. Crimes, like sexual abuse, do happen in private spaces like bedrooms. Some people propose or request that all private spaces have surveillance, for example with cameras. Data should be stored, analyzed and

Of course. Perhaps it is wrong to talk about middle management being replaced by AI. It seems that AI as of now is not very inventive. It is a clever mash-up of things that were already done by humans. But most employees just do that. They

Last year I tendered a logo redesign to freelancers on a specialized website. The experience was not pleasant. After all they are humans. They had diverging interests. Two designers did something I liked and I would have liked to combine th

It is my opinion that software problems tend be analyzed corresponding to these four axes: - Can an end-user solve the problem themselves? If so, tell them how, if not, display a generic error message telling them to ask for support (with a

Gamma rays are photons. Photons influence matter. One example is infrared which we sense as warmth. I am somewhat fuzzy here, but I imagine that these photons bump into the atoms of our skin such that they tend to shake more vigourously tha

Yes, this was a thing already thirty years ago. There's even a term for them: coded reference letters. I even got a reference letter explicitly declaring that it doesn't contain hidden codes. https://www.arbeitszeugnis.

One way I try to solve that problem in Rust: use repeated `let thing = simple.invocation();`. No need to rename the variable `thing` if not neccessary. Rust allows redefining a variable with the same name. Additionally I sometimes give the
