What a narrow-minded view. The problem is not that null exists, it's that many statically-typed languages don't let you distinguish nullable from non-nullable variables. In the ones that do, null is functionally equivalent to Mayb

I think what you're thinking of is the JavaScript JIT situation. A JIT compiles and executes arbitrary, new, native code at runtime. A regular interpreter doesn't create native code.

unsafe { } blocks already exist, and in fact it looks like these have to go inside of them. Rust can do unsafe things, it just goes to great lengths to empower you to avoid accidentally doing unsafe things. It also forces you to label all

a) Any static type system has things that it can't express elegantly or maybe at all. In my experience, the more "meta" your project is, the more you're going to run up against these bounds. So it makes sense that this c

At the risk of stretching the metaphor, what I'm talking about are bearings that separate the wheel from the rest of the car. Maybe you have a thin, outward-facing server that does nothing but authenticate, validate, and sanitize input

I think there's some truth to this, but the same is true in, say, the Java world where you're almost not even writing things in Java-the-language, you're writing things in Spring. That said, it's probably more true in th

The point remains, though, that I avoided an unnecessary dependency. I copied that function once and never needed to mess with it again, because it was 15 lines and I could verify personally that it did what it needed to do. For contrast, w

Yeah, I wondered if it was something like that. Sounds like input is sanitized before it even touches that system. Which begs an interesting train of thought: could we make systems that last longer by doing a better job of isolating pieces

During the midterms we were watching the live vote tallying on CNN, and at one point one of the hosts accidentally said "we" when referring to the Democrats. It was at that point I stopped taking CNN seriously.
