My understanding is that high-karma accounts can downvote comments/posts. HN is still primarily a community where supporting & encouraging those building things is the norm. Criticism of makers isn't rare, but my hunch is that

I thought this was an absolutely masterful explanation of engineering design thinking. If I may, I would also like to add to this list another thing he mentioned: "each requirement must have a name attached to it." I believe he wa

Welp, first, thank you for taking the time to respond here. My mom won't believe it when I tell her that THE Ray Ozzie responded to my random HN comment :) Second, could you comment a bit on the latency/bandwidth of your solution?

This is very interesting. I'll provide a hot take since Seam (YC S20, i.e. the company I work for) could be a target customer for this for our on-prem multi-protocol hub. There are a number of use-cases that need a cellular back-up con

thank you for all the great comments in this thread. I'm a former Li-Ion researcher (Yi Cui group). I'm less familiar with grid storage. Would you be open to chatting a bit more about this? My email is in my profile. Thank You!

We recently started publishing our legal stuff for Seam: https://getseam.com/legal The TL;DR, I had an excellent attorney friend (who, cherry on the quake, has a CS degree and understands APIs very well) write all of it for

I apologize for being a bit late to this comment, but I would also like to suggest that people look into eMMC boards. As one commenter suggested, SD cards are prone to failures (we saw this as Seam and earlier at Sonder!). The Black Beagleb

I agree 110% with this! The touchscreens confuse new people not used to it. As far as Schlage, yeah... let's just say there's a few folks in the Home Assistant community (and us too) who are not super impressed with their protocol

I'm not going to try to convince you that key-exchanges are bad for short-lived visits (whether electronic lockboxes or not). We just know from experience doing millions of these for a large company that this is very problematic at tim

Just a quick caveat that for non-consumer contexts, completely offline stuff doesn't cut it. The enterprise customers we have do want to get status reports for the devices (e.g. battery level, lock/unlocked status, which code was

I thought a bit more about your question. There's surprisingly not much unbiased research out there that correctly points out the pros/cons of each system. I'll try to write something soon and post it.

yeah the battery only lasts 24 hours, though I suspect we could eventually implement a low-power mode in our firmware to stretch that quite a bit. To be honest, I'm also not sure to what extend we want to over index black-swan events [

We are not. This is mostly because we are an infrastructure company that takes care of bridging the air-gap between the devices out there and the software applications that want to use them. Whether the locks are used for hospitality, self-

is this with SmartRent? My hunch is that they're trying to lower their cellular data costs by having you connect their units to wifi. I had no heard of this being surfaced as a lease-agreement clause though. Fwiw, we haven't run i

hm, it's a good question. I (personally) really like Yale devices, but I hate the touchscreens and would prefer something with physical key buttons. I'm also generally against locks that connect directly to wifi because the batter

Depends a bit on the lock or access system. As of right now, most smart locks out there are still using a combination of zigbee, zwave, or bluetooth. This means that if you want remote control, you need to bridge them over to TCP/IP. W
