That's because they were assimilated before the age of PC and multiculturalism. We used to insist that immigrants adopt the same culture and values that we have. Now, we encourage those people to recreate their own cultures here, only

This comment is interesting: The only haskell thing that works good is xmonad. I used it for years and still very happy with it. The only haskell things that works fast are qsort and shootout tests. The other haskell soft is full of

You know those meetings where three or four guys go back and forth trying to prove who's the smartest guy in the room? HN is that on a larger scale. I can't help but think this tendency of ours can't be hacked into something

So does that make the millions of illegals in the country an under-underclass?

That brings up the question: what's considered blogspam and what's considered good commentary? Is that automated, or is there a judgement made by the moderators?

I would argue your comment is a better example of that kind of commenting. tptacek gave us an opinion on the topic at hand. You commented solely to attack him and whine. Which one do you think does more damage to HN?

When did that become a reality? It certainly wasn't the case just 5 years ago.

I'm sorry, but this just isn't true. Everybody has cognitive social biases at play when hiring. Even those who are aware of it and who go through great pains to isolate their feelings from the interview process will fall into the

I'm curious: has anybody here who advocates a physical keyboard tried swype? I also hate non-physical keyboards on phones, but swype makes it considerably easier than typing with two hands. I can type out long sentences quickly using j

I tried that. It was wildly inaccurate as far as gesture detection and even click detection. Two finger taps for right clicks would frequently be detected as a single finger click. The problems got worse the more advanced the gestures got.

Try that with git. My last company did just that. The repository wound up being 30gb at the end of the project (which was a 3d facebook game). We tried to host on a company hosted github, but got kicked off because it couldn't deal w

if you should buy an EV you risk holding the bag should it become radically obsolete in the next three to five years. Not if, when. You can see this with electric motorcycles right now. The difference between the 2014 Zero and the 2012 Ze

They support all of that. At my last job, we made a huge 3d facebook game written entirely in c#. We compiled independent libraries, copied them into Assets/Plugins and ran the game using the UI. Everything was procedurally generated b

It's nice to see actual numbers and risk rates. I had dismissed the Tesla fires as insignificant. Your post has made me think I should take a second look.

MonoDevelop is free, but if you have a large code base, it's very slow. As in "wait 30 minutes for MonoDevelop to start and analyze the entire project" slow. And then the crashes... Xamarin fixes all of these problems. But th

You see the problem? Not really. If you don't like windows, use Linux or OS X and Mono.

I agree entirely and followed a similar path to what you did. I switched from linux to OS X in 2004. I'm looking to switch back, but the linux desktop experience hasn't changed much if at all in the intervening years. Elementary O

We also didn't used to have the government telling us to increase our consumption of grains and carbs and decrease our consumption of saturated fat. HFCS also didn't used to be in every piece of packaged food in the grocery store.

What about a desktop app that activated whenever you drag a photo into an email? Instead of attaching itself to the email, it uploads the photo to imgur and externally links to the image in the email instead?

I second this. It's a big enough issue for me that if Mavericks doesn't fix it, I'll be switching back to Linux.

I've been shampoo free for three years, now. It's like the parent says. My transition period lasted 4 weeks and I wore a hat the entire time. After that, my hair was the softest it's been in its life. No fuss, no muss. I wash

Do you have any references for that? I'm not pro or con either way (yet), I'm just gathering research. I'd love to know if there are any recorded cases of this and the doses involved.
