True but the 10,000 civilians were not all killed while they were living there. Most were evacuated as the battlefield front lines moved towards those towns. In Iraq, there were 10s of thousands of civilian casualties estimated within the f

I live in Ukraine and run a software company here. I still don’t understand how the power grid is still functioning and how quickly it is repaired after an outage. I’ve been here since the war started, including some of the worst hit front

Iraq was much worse. I heard it first hand from a US veteran who served in Iraq and then volunteered in Ukraine. We were driving together through Kharkiv surveying damage and he said: the damage here is nothing compared to what we did to Ba

For some reason I can’t help but think of the analogies of our current situation to the last years of the Soviet Union, when on paper it looked like a juggernaut albeit with decrepit leaders, but the numbers were lies, more lies and statist

If you go to the doctor with a problem and get a blood test and they say that everything looks fine, but you don’t feel fine, then you don’t say: “well the numbers are right, I should feel fine”. Rather you try to find what the numbers aren

I did not say they were nice. That’s my entire point. These are examples of the most popular Western brands though. Same goes for any popular Western brand of anything. I even prefer Ukrainian local toothpaste to Colgate. Tastes better

It’s not just apples, dear. Mass market capitalism does this to *everything*. Everything just becomes so bland. When I moved from my native Canada to a poor backwater Eastern European country (not in the EU) I suddenly noticed how different

You don’t get to claim that an “event happened long before recorded history under entirely different conditions”, because anyone can make that claim. That’s not science, not evidence. I can claim the same thing for intentional creation, for

It’s not just that a few puzzle pieces are missing. Abiogenesis is entirely unproven and nobody has a clue how it works and nobody can demonstrate experimentally any of the hypothetical mechanisms.

You’re misunderstanding the point about fine-tuning entirely. It doesn’t matter how many billions of years it took, if some of the parameters of fundamental physics were slightly different, even trillions of years would’ve resulted in nothi

Any educational “system” strongly selects for conformity. A student can’t question the system or they’ll be sidelined early on and failed for giving the “wrong” answer. Geniuses are almost by definition weirdos who question the status quo.

Perhaps the very idea of having standardized evaluations needs to be questioned. Anything that can be measured will be gamed. Nothing “repeatable” can capture the whole value of a human being.
