I have a PHP script that does idempotentcy. It was strictly easier to write than a similar code in bash the moment one needs non-trivial and robust patching of config files. And passing force flags can lead to subtle issues as -f and frie

Bash on Mac is deprecated and zsh is sufficiently different. Plus on minimal installs of containers or in VM one may not even have it with /bin/sh provided by dash or similar minimal shell. So my rule of thumb if one cannot use p

Given that one can compile C to Wasm it is simply not true that it would break C code. Wasm implements pointers as offset into an array and then checks for out-of-bounds access. LLVM should be able to do that directly.

The science is about making inferences and checking how good such predictions match reality. Religion, on the other hand, can at best explain, not predict in any verifiable way. That is, it is about deducting consequences from one’s beliefs

The proper fallback is costly both hardware-wise and in development efforts. It can be cheaper just skip it and tolerate occasional service unavailability.

Science by definition cannot discover the truth. The essential property of a scientific theory is falsifiability. I.e. it should be possible to carry out experiment that can disprove the theory or it is not a scientific theory. Religion on

At least in the capital it is unproblematic. The charging places on the streets that supplies at least 3KW are common, parking garages advertise that they have many charging places (one near me states over 100 spots for about 300 parking pl

The first paragraph describes the situation in Norway that was like 5-6 years ago. The second is less applicable in Norway due to zero tax policy on electric cars and like 100% in total taxes on ICE. So even 5 years ago it could be sensible

I visited at the end of eighties a research institute in a former USSR. They had a whole room with computers put in a Faraday cage to prevent any data leaks with supposedly secret information. The cage was a mesh made of thin metal sheets w

This is simply not true. There are a highly paid professions in US that are dominated by women, like that of veterinarians (as I wrote on another comment it pays better in US than programming) or some fields in medicine or law.

The point is not to spend time writing init.el in the first place. I only need to setup few times per year and the time I spent writing my init file for Emacs is way bigger than I can save even in 100 years of using VS code. Some people enj

I have not bothered to use sync as I can setup VS code fast enough without it. Plus there are settings that require platform-specific adjustments. Maybe there are some ifs in the config that covers it, but I just see no point to spend time

The question is can unused potion of the stack be used for anything else? With native threads the answer is no and so is with Go green threads. Time will tell if Java can pull off the trick of sharing unused space place, but I am sceptical.

I like CSP precisely because it requires to color-annotate the code so it is knows what can and what cannot do IO! Surely it decreases flexibility, but makes reasoning about and maintaining the code easier.

In Go one can block the native thread via using API that use blocking OS calls, like Linux file IO. In this case Go runtime allocates more native threads to run other language threads.
