For >99% of people looking to compile code or render video on an M5 Laptop they are interested in the wall-clock time, running bare metal, assuming all IO is to a fast NVMe SSD, and even a large job will only thermally throttle for a bit

Are we actually sure they didn't do due diligence? This is the individual's work files of civil servants. These will overwhelmingly be temporary documents they were legally obliged to delete at some point in the last 8 years. Any

Any benchmark useful to cross compare single user desktop/laptop experience is going to be useless in the datacentre; and vice versa.

tbc I think F-Droid is much _more_ secure than Play. What I am saying is I have many family members who can just about follow the rule "First search F-Droid then search Play". No, they are not going to use a phone with only F-Droi

Doubling the number of people on a custom ROM dose not nearly balance the loss of options for those that remain on a stock ROM. I do not want my less technical family to have to give away all the genuine (though imperfect) safety the Play S

Are you suggesting A&E should not treat you if you are unluckly enough to land on your phone as you get run over etc? Or that prescription fraud cost anything close to what the government will spend implementing a major new IT system?

Unfortunately this is not true, loads of cool techy stuff (Sentry, GitHub) etc still don't work properly on IPv6, less techy stuff really didn't care at all.

This news is probably my excuse to buy my forth EOS; the first three were 100% only because of Magic Lantern. Can't understand why manufacturers make this hard as it sells hardware.

Easy enough to have an efuse blow if you overvolt; then an dificult conversion on a warrenty claim. Whilst ideologically this is ceeding some control I can accept it.

I am not the original commenter; but they said "low-power user cases" i.e. very much not when running Geekbench; rather when it is near idle.

https://github.com/x653/xv6-riscv-fpga is a fully open RISC-V core, using fully open tools written to tiny FPGA. It betters 386 performance, is practical for an individual to recreate, and it is almost inconceivable th

Even with Coreboot on anything vaguely modern, there is a 'Management Engine' or 'Platform Security Processor' you can't practically control. On the better understood Intel versions, this is running a full MINIX 3 o

Yes, very clear warnings; I could live with a small permanent icon in the status bar (via the GPU firmware) etc. But absolutely should not void warranties (overclocking might but never just root).

Whilst I hate subscriptions, I am not imediatly offended by a £650 reduction in the cost of a car to lock out the last 10% of power that I would expect to have a disproportionate cost to the warrenty.
