I know this sounds silly, but would you be able to confirm that this is based on actual conversations that you've personally had with game developers about projects they've personally worked on? There have been rumours stoked espe

Thanks, I will read up on these. I was feeling fairly secure that this was a concern that hadn't materialised, but it seems I have since been proved wrong :)

Not sure about the per-game config, but the Proton is definitely open source [0], as are DXVK [1] and D9VK [2]. Steam Play is part of the Steam client, so is proprietary. ProtonDB isn't open source but does data dumps to github regular

I think it's worth differentiating between 'Proton' the compatibility layer technology and 'Proton DB' [0] the review platform and ratings agency. All the problems listed above are purely ProtonDB issues. It would b

Proton is Wine + DXVK + d9VK + custom patches. The 'secret sauce' is actually 'Steam Play' which is the automated wrapping, configuration and execution of Proton wrapped games without the user having to do anything (ot

Could you cite some examples? I know of games that have dropped Linux support (RUST, Rocket League) but those are all to do with Anti-cheat rather than citing Proton as a feasible alternative to a native port.

For those who missed it, Cliqz did a very in-depth series of blog posts on their tech [0]. Basically, it was "word2vec: The Search Engine". It was actually very impressive in terms of semantic understanding, but the index was pret

I have now used this to explain some of our architecture to a client over Teams. If you guys haven't tried building up a diagram, live, step by step like an ad-hoc slideshow, I seriously recommend it.

I'm surprised that Fish isn't used more for education. I don't know of any distros aimed at new users which have fish as the default. I don't think I've seen any tutorials that use fish to teach shell concepts. It

Gabe Weinberg has previously stated on hacker news that DDG was profitable at about 4M queries a day (it is now over 100M). The economics are that you charge more for ads than you pay for API calls. That's all there is to it, really.

It's also a possible butterfly effect. Would Bitcoin have taken off without those specific few thousand coins in the economy? If even half of Bitcoin holders at the time thought they'd make it big and held, how could Bitcoin have

The mpv example was my main thought. If you want to add something to a playlist using mpv's playlist feature you have to stop and restart mpv.

I think that's a fair statement in isolation, and I do find Blow's grandiose and loose use of language to get in the way of his message, but I believe the point stands. The knowledge was lost and that is the part that is most rele

The model dictates the medium. Advertising as a model has forced a need for engagement, notifications, stickiness, attention grabbing. I'd argue the term 'pay for the services [they use]' is too vague here to be meaningful -
