Please note that you still can't ship an app that uses Automatic Reference Counting on iOS, and we don't have any real idea of when we will be able to. Last time I had a discussion about this on HN, the other person was convinced it would h

The code is very easy read. And, when you're getting started, being easy to read is very important. Besides, it is still semantically correct. (Also FWIW, I didn't find it very awkward, personally.) I might even be convinced to go a step fu

Close. A protocol says that an object can (and in some (but not all) cases, is required to) implement a given list of methods, leaving the implementation/the "how" up to the programmer. Think of protocols as being similar to interfaces in J

What was your issue with that? It not being written as below? return [self hasPrefix:@"http://"]; If so, I disagree. The way it was written in the tutorial is easier to read when going into a new language — and teaches you that Objec

Wolfram Alpha isn't a search engine, and doesn't DDG use Yahoo/Bing's API for some things? One major player going away, another losing something like 9 Billion, and one or two minor players stepping up isn't exactly a volatile industry.

You're going to have to give us more than that to go on. Like, you know, an actual downside to using WebSockets?

I would wonder how many of those accounts have pushed to a repo recently, not just their own (in cases where people work for a company/on a project that has a GitHub organization).

I typically use PullToRefresh from https://github.com/leah/PullToRefresh instead of EGOTableViewPullRefresh. It positions itself as a superclass that handles all of the logic, rather than an external object that handles the delegate metho

I might be an outlier, but, I spent a few hours last weekend looking for a color picker that had CMYK support. Although, maybe I'll send a pull request your way, if I find the time to add it in.. should just be a matter of colorUsingColorSp

I suspect that by using the word "intensity" to describe what he's going to change, andrewcooke is well aware of this already :) For everyone else: there's a color model that is occasionally used in computer vision called Hue Saturation Int

Instead of saying that so many times, why not just toggle the system-wide preference and look at the file that was changed? And then toggle it again and diff the two.

I don't know. I signed up to see if I could get access to the KDK when it was first announced (late January '10, I think). Never heard back from Amazon. As a counterpoint, a friend of mine signed up when it was announced as well, and was gi

Be sure to read the comments as well; the guy who built the form for Square in the first place points out some other subtle details that the form has.

One of the best things about the iPhone simulator is that it is a simulator and not an emulator (unlike, say, Android). This makes it fast enough to actually be usable for day to day bug testing.

Apple already did this, back in 10.4, with Core Image. It will be added to iOS whenever iOS 5 is out.

While that may functionally be a replacement for UDIDs, that is not the intended purpose for those classes. They're supposed to do a lot more.

No, it won't. This is a deprecation . The API will still be there, and it will still work. Using the API will now have a compile-time warning that developers will see. At some point — far off, in the future — the API might be removed. Bu

I'm not objecting to UITableViewCell subclasses to manage each type of view -- thats a nice, reusable design. getCellForTableView:controller: to return an instance of a given cell is essentially what I do (although I keep it as a class meth

Interesting idea. But, I don't necessarily like it. You're moving the display logic for a view controller to be outside of the view controller. You now have to know where a view was created and presented from in order to change any of the v

Have you ever looked at the code in JSONKit? It makes perfect sense that it won't support ARC. JSONKit has a lot of small optimizations that deal with allocating memory that interfere with ARC and the assumptions the compiler needs to be ab
