The biggest thing to learn isnt in the patches. It's in the process -- don't be afraid to break things, and dont let "I don't know everything about this" stop you from learning one small corner of it.

Do you really go hack on random large codebases at a moment's notice when something about them irks you? If so, please know that nobody else on the planet can do this without spending weeks of time (conservatively). Yes. At least when the

The equation is: I liked this story + I like to think of myself as a hacker + Hacker Hews is for hackers [1] = I'm going to post this on Hacker News Or, in the reduced form[2]: I found this interesting + I think this article would

Two things: 1. Why do they have to be "junior"-level? When you start a job, do you want to be doing easy stuff? Or do you want to be doing the fun, challenging stuff? If you're looking for projects that have bugs that are easy, or easy-but-

Um. What? While, yes, it is more expensive to detect that something is a link than not, it isn't that expensive to do. Neither is drawing an attributed string with Core Text. Yes, its hard. No, it isn't nearly as hard as you're making it ou

You can get the onscreen graphics context and convert it to an image to send over the network fairly easily. I'd guess that you probably won't get a full remote desktop experience, nor would you really need one. Just an image and a "tap her

Maybe the startup could clone his repo and keep part of their product updated by the community for free. How does it make sense for Path to abandon their original implementation of this idea and to use the GitHub project instead?

You can do something similar with iOS development as well, by implementing a -debugDescription method to return a NSString * object that is then printed out when you use print-object (or po ) from GDB/LLDB. If -debugDescription is not im

But it works. And users will never know the difference. Sure they will, when your app starts to crash, or become unreasonably slow due to something hacked together without a second thought as to how well it would work.

You know? I had a long post written out. About how I'm actually one of those developers who you're questioning and so on. But, none of that is relevant. The only thing that matters is this: Growl is the #2 app in the entire Mac App Store.

That isn't how I read his statement, even after reading your reply to me. However.. the SDK is still free, easy to integrate (having done the integration process myself) and users still like it. That last point is, really, the important par

With growl being a paid app now, will developer support wane? If anything, this will help increase core Growl developer support; they actually profit from spending time on Growl now.

My thought on the icon: Get rid of the paragraph symbol and keep the rest, maybe add two more lines of text to the page behind the paragraph symbol, to make the top/bottom border slightly thinner. At least, for now, until you get a designer

What happens if you delete the last class that #imported something? Do you remove the #import? What if the #import wasn't automatically added? Still automatically remove it? How about if you don't need the #import for a class, but, instead

Have you tried Xcode 4? I'm not its biggest fan, but, it is a step up from Xcode 3 when it comes to refactoring. It can rename a class everywhere in your project, for example.

There is no API for Hacker News. There's http://api.ihackernews.com/ , which is unofficial and based on screen scraping, and doing the screen-scraping yourself.

There is no reason to support anything earlier than iOS 4.3 for an app being released today. There's only one reason that I can think of: Verizon/CDMA iPhones only run iOS 4.2.x, and won't be on parity with GSM iPhones until iOS 5 comes o
