I actually hadn't looked too closely at MacRuby. Might I suggest that you do so? ...but compared to (particularly) Lua it's just not fast enough. I beg to differ; Here's why: http://christopherroach.com/2010/01/21/ruby-fibonacci-shooto

MacRuby isn't a scripting language, though. Or, it doesn't have to be. It can get compiled down to machine code if you're making an application in it.

Nope. No relationship between the two, besides a few helper methods on NSCFString to go either way. And characterAtIndex: will return a unichar, not a char, anyway.

Yup, very bad for a lot of smaller IRC networks; 3.2.8.1 is the latest version of UnrealIRCd and what most of them (assuming that they are up to date) are on.

Yeah, TechEd is not supposed to be an announcement conference. Neither is WWDC. Aside from the keynote, the rest of the week is under NDA and devoted to teaching developers about the new tech in Mac/iPhone/iPad/whatever and helping them f

You could solve this easily by only activating it after a period of inactivity. Stop typing for a second, and the suggestion box pops up. Xcode has a preference (well, two) that help out with autocorrection. I heard about it at last WWDC,

FWIW, If you use the key commands, the first and third issues are avoidable -- though, I have run into all of the issues when using the mouse. There's a key combo for that opening the find and replace menu; ctrl + cmd + c. Then you can tab

Aside from the custom keyboard (which seems to not always be on screen? See: the third image.) and syntax highlighting that looks rather ugly, for i is rather sparse on features. Not something that I'd pay $10 for yet.

It might have been better as a more generic "Ask HN: Who's hiring interns?" thread. But, nothing against the rules about this sort of post (not to mention that there's always the "Ask HN: Who's Hiring <redux>" threads that pop up ev

There are more reasons to check for an email than simply validation. Perhaps you want to detect emails in a field and let people click/tap on them to send that person an email? Don't want to let people send email off to foo@bar.baz now, do

If this was that big of a deal for an online site in which you say whether you like something or not, I'd have thought that sites would hide the username from everyone until you voted on a comment/story/etc. However, in practice, its not th

In this way it's not terribly different from a lot of jobs. Sure, it's much better than most, but I would be careful about thinking life as an artist is truly an escape from the rigors of the real world. FWIW, my suggestion was specifical

Art. Probably not a job, but for a very nice hobby, try it out. Draw or paint something. Find an old camera (film-based) and take some pictures. Then develop the pictures yourself in a darkroom. Sounds like a a bunch of simple tasks, right?

The first real line of code I wrote (I'm not counting poorly crafted HTML) was when I was 16, as a senior in high school. And that was Visual Basic. We didn't do C until the second half of the year (and by this point, I was 17). Which right

LLVM/Clang might look impressive but AFAIK not even Apple is using it to ship production code. Now, see, thats just plain wrong. Apple ships some pretty big products that are built with clang/llvm: Xcode, OpenGL and OpenCL to name a few.
