It may look intimidating at first, but it's really very easy once you get the basics. HTTP and IRC on the other hand look easy at first, then you get past that and there's just more and more complications and edge cases and horror

I use XMPP every day. All my friends are on XMPP. What makes you think XMPP is dead? What are "various reasons"?

Skype hasn't been a pain on Linux since the Microsoft takeover. It was a huge pain long before. XMPP with http://swift.im/ and http://conversations.im/ is much more pleasant.

We in the Prosody project were using Google Code and the project leader really liked their issue tracker. When the shutdown was announced, we looked around but found nothing that met our needs, so we ended up writing our own. I'm perso

Is OpenSSL 1.1.0 really released? The comment linked does not say so, only that the feature has landed in vcs. Edit: https://openssl.org/news/newslog.html says "Alpha 1 of OpenSSL 1.1.0 is now available"

It does not. In practice both are equivalent in that regard. I guess tptacek meant that Signal might have less control over you than Telegram, but that's a different issue from what I was thinking of. Both Telegram, Signal¹ rely on a

Email is federated. Not sure I'd call HTTP federated in itself, but protocols like StatusNet that build on HTTP are federated.

Pretty sure you want your XMPP client to announce that it is online, so you'd have to implement that anyways.
