I certainly would! If the foreign competition is now cut off I'd raise prices just below them. To do otherwise would be stupid. This is were tariffs can go horribly wrong: it destroys the incentive for competition between companies.

Apparently my country is technically capable of being self sufficient but people diet would have to change back to the 19th century if we were completely cut off (no coffee, tea, tomatoes, bananas, shiracha sauce).

The way Dutch people combat the admittedly scary process of dying is by treating it as an event. I think the best comparison is a wedding. You do your rehearsals, pick out music and clothes, train the bridesmaids, pick a venue, call the cat

Imagine if you will a situation in which the Palestinians or Ukrainians had a few nukes. At the very least every country including my own should have a way to drag the enemy down to the hell should all else fail.

I buy a midrange Samsung phone and I understand that they need to make some money on it. But with Apple you're paying 1000 eurodollars so the least they can do is respect the customer.

In my country such things are discussed in parliament during endless sessions about the yearly budget. They are not decreed by a god emperor at a whim.

500 million sounds like a lot but that is just a drop in the ocean for first world nation states. The Netherlands has a yearly budget of 300 billion for example.

I don't think a lot of Americans know this: the EU is China's biggest trade partner. And the EU has free trade in it's DNA.

Its interesting how America is basically run by an elected king. In Europe these kind of decisions take months of meetings and consultations.

In the case of the Netherlands we place humans above god. Ultimately Dutch philosophers came to the conclusion that the individual and their happiness are at the very epicenter of the universe. It broke the chains of mental slavery inherent

That's not how it worked. Armies had the tendency to eat more than the locals could provide. A region that could feed itself suddenly has to provide for thousands of soldiers. This is why war inevitably led to starvation.

I don't think the Rust belt really gives a shit about high tech industry making chips. I have seen this in my own country when mega corps build highly automated data centres that only employ a few local cleaners and security guards.

Isn't that the case for every country? My grandfather lived in a shack. He was a farmhand. In the winter his family almost starved. Our nation's prosperity is a very recent phenomenon.

Normal folks vote for the fascists. How many Americans despise the liberal universities and their students? How many Americans think the US should be a Christian nation? Fascism is popular. Many people will fall for it. Time and time again.
