My anecdata shows people who have no/limited experience in software engineering are suddenly able to produce “software”. That is, code of limited engineering value. It technically works, but is a ultimately an unmaintainable, intractab

But surely B&W TVs only exist with analog tuners?

Since the switch to digital, presumably there’s no longer and signal for B&W TVs.

It's a bit like the old saying, "All models are wrong, some models are useful." The concept of a "word" is useful in everyday language, particularly in English -- it's host language, unsurprisingly enough -- an

I don't think that's how containerisation works. It uses the host machine's kernel, so unless Docker has been ported to OS2, there's no way to run OS2 inside Docker.

This can’t be an exhaustive list. A major company (80k+ employees) whom I was recently contracting for was affected and they are not on the list.

I used to live in an area with a similar system for rubbish (near Wembley Stadium, in north west London). While it worked, it suffered from a number of “quality of life” issues. The chute terminals had quite a small aperture, with a sealed

A number of people have commented that they’ve never experienced a filename with `\n`, or other weird characters, in the wild. On the contrary, I’ve seen this many many times, to the point that I’m defensive about how I write scripts, to co

The way my clipboard-clearer worked would have exposed* the plaintext secret if it wasn't hashed. Surely this would be generally true; however, in my case, it would have been particularly trivial to exfiltrate. (* The clipboard exposur

Presumably the costs for a platform are passed on to the platform's customers from that platform's cloud provider (with profit). When a spike happens due to, say, a DDOS, does the platform first have to negotiate with the cloud pr

I wrote a CLI password manager as a personal project a few years ago and it would only clear the clipboard if the hash of the contents matched the hash of what was originally copied. I presume `pass` does something similar.

This is an IO bound problem. Trying to "go faster" by using multiple threads or vectorisation isn't going to achieve much.

Time is a dependency like any other, so use dependency inversion. (Which I think is advocated by TFA’s approaches 4 and 5.) Define an interface for timers, which is injected into the object that depends on time. Use a wrapper implementation
