I've never met anyone that thought the LPs were meant to imply Amazon "really cares". I like Amazon because it seems more straightforward than other companies. It's a business and it wants to make money. The only way I&#

Horrible take. The aesthetics and user experience of an app has a direct correlation to whether the average user (which includes me, a programmer at Amazon) will use a tool.

I think both situations are unsustainable. I'm not financially stable because I hate my job and might quit at any time and he doesn't make enough money. But I think my main point is both of us have a way of becoming sustainable so

I'm 29 and have 500k saved up (live in Santa Monica which is quite expensive), but yes I think I will quit my next stock vest which is Friday. And idk. My best friend from high school moved out here with me and he's a waiter makin

There are a lot of ways to make money. Picking a job based on money is a good way to be absolutely miserable. My parents pushed me towards making money my entire life and there is nothing I regret more than following that advice. Every day

Seems wrong to influence your son's decision based on your financial situation rather than his desires/passions. Of course if he's naturally interested in the trades then sure.

Nice work, but seems like WSD accomplishes the same with a nicer syntax and hosted interface https://www.websequencediagrams.com/

I’ll believe it when I see it. Heard this sentiment 100s of times. Also housing is really only out of reach ina few highly desirable places. Many of the places that are now super desirable weren’t that great when the previous generations w

I make lots of money but I feel 10 years of CS and programming turned me into an emotionless robot so idk if it was.

Bias obviously. It's commonly known that during the pandemic Amazon was the highest paying FAANG (besides maybe netflix). SDE2s were getting 400k+.

Your sentiment is nice in theory, but in reality it's just a recipe for getting taken advantage of.

If you already know the javascript ecosystem then it's probably fun. But if you don't its heavily draining. Also Go is decidedly antifun so maybe not a good comparison.

My team at Amazon still uses spreadsheets and I much prefer it to Jira.

The other secret is CS faculty don't care because if they wanted to study math they'd have gotten a math PhD instead of a CS one. =)

No because I would never do that. If my choices were work in Santa Monica and drive 2-3 hours a day or live in Ohio, I would live in Ohio.

I think many people would consider Tokyo an overbuilt hellscape and never want to live there. I much prefer Santa Monica.

People need a place to live but does that place have to be in California? It doesn’t make sense to talk about living in Santa Monica as a need.

Maybe at the entire country level that’s true but why is it important what people that don’t share your values care about? The people I’m surrounded with care much much more about creativity and the ability to have unique and interesting id

Maybe you live in a world where high pay = status, but that’s not my experience. I think you at least sort of agree because you note that SWEs don’t have much proximity to power and are lower status because of it. I could have guessed your

I don't think on call is a sign of low status, but I think OP is correct that programming is a low status job. People respect the business guys with the big ideas, not the implementors and tbh I think that's fair. It's still

Making contributions to the foundation, profitable parts of the business is one of the best ways to be a hotshot.

I'm fine with the argument that its not rational and not a good process because the outcome will be bad (firing people that you should have kept). I'm only pushing back against the idea that a business should put protecting people

The ability of the process to prune dead weight and the emotions of the people affected are kind of unrelated. It's a business not a charity.

I see you were right, but I think both choices (loathe and likely) are acceptable. I originally thought jack was saying "its unfortunate to find" or "it's disgusting to find".

Disagree that sports are a form of brotherly conflict. Maybe within the same team but definitely not considering the win/loss dynamic between teams. You can approach disagreements with the idea that both people are working together to

Sports are better, but I think encouraging competition and tribal urges are a waste of time in general. Better to encourage collaboration and self expression.

I'm going to add a second data point of deep regret over time spent gaming and playing sports in high school and college. They contributed negatively to my life and put me so far behind where I could have been socially and intellectual
