At a mathematical level, it's pretty elegant how quantum mechanics works. At the level of the article, not so much. Once you get the math (and it really kind of clicks all at once), it's not too hard. The problem is that the math has a

To be fair, Apple didn't have much to lose if the deal didn't go through. So I can see why the "take it or leave it" strategy works in this case. It would be interesting to see how Jobs negotiated in a case where the other party had the up

I don't think this study supports the article's headline. That headline, more explicitly stated is: "[Society rates you as] less beautiful than you [do]". Why? Someone's physical beauty is a property that depends on what everyone thinks.

A lot of these arguments against the future of Bitcoin rest on the ill-founded assumption that the Bitcoin protocol is static and unchanging. This isn't necessarily true; there's already reactionary plans should SHA-2 or secp256k1 become c

Ah, I did not realize he had not really published before. I suppose that is very surprising. Also, the way your post is written seems to suggest that most results out of nowhere are "crankish". Are there really people who spend their tim

So, there's two (slightly off topic) questions this article raises that I've had for a while. Perhaps someone who's been in academia longer than I have can enlighten me. First, the article talks about experts within the field. I've been a

Alcatel sure has fallen. My father worked for them in France in the mid-90s. He said at the time, they were one of the best run and most exciting companies in the world. They had research labs in all sorts of things all over the place.

This one has a kind of parallax effect going on: http://wry.me/hacking/Turing-Drawings/#4,3,1,2,3,1,1,0,0,1,1... You'll want to watch it about four notches down from "fastest". This is a really cool project! It has a kind of AI feel to

I too am happy about this. I received my BS in chemical engineering from Georgia Tech last year. I had a few friends in CS, and I can say the program is really top-notch and up-to-date. I really like chemical engineering, but I also real

Thanks! Traffic hit a spike the first time I posted it, and then it died to zero the next week. I thought I'd save myself $3.00 a month without hosting. I'm cheap :) Maybe I'll keep it up this time?

As some of you requested, here's the app listing .io domain names I made about 8 months ago. I notice there's a lot less words available this time -- although I did only check the top 30,000 most frequent words instead of 50,000 so as to n

260 days ago I posted a webapp I made on HN, listing all of the available remaining .io domains in order of most common words -- with 2, 3, 4, and 5 letter columns. It was completely free, but it got one upvote I think? The site is curren

I am familiar with how hashes work (I've written a Bitcoin address generator myself). To illustrate what I mean: The Bitcoin address is just some chain of hashes (and a checksum) applied to the public key. To prove that the address IS actu

I would think the solution to this problem is to somehow prove to the blockchain that the address was indeed produced by the SHA256 RIPEMD160 process. I would think mathematically there is some way to do this without revealing what it was
