And this has been the same problem with pgp and crypt ion in general. Too costly in man time. To much to manage, regenerate, etc. unless it becomes transparent or setup once and forget it encryption will never get easier to deploy or manage

Yes and they have a poor implementation for encryption at that. Pawel who did the port of zfs to FreeBSD did not like how they implemented it. As far as zfs goes oracle will be the odd man out compatibility wise with the rest of the platfor

I disagree. The BSD's surely meet your definition of "large open source projects being driven by unpaid volunteers" and I argue they are not only viable but the longest running if not largest open source projects ever.

I don't follow the cryptocurrency world much. The last time I tried to really look into all the coins I bought some Monero. Monero seems the most sound technically and cryptographically. Can someone explain to me why one alt coin like

The website makes it sound just like Tarsnap. Am I wrong? Is there some compelling feature I am missing that would make me want to switch from Tarsnap?

I don't count Google. Google is an unreliable product company. They kill half their products and the other half are absolute tire fires. You may like android, but it's ugly AF compared to iOS which is far from perfect. Gmail needs

This seems pretty nice. Does anyone know if there is anything similar in the oracle camp? This seems like a big win over them if not.

Off topic but curious, who makes good metal detectors today? I haven't used one since I was a small kid. But I might look at one. I just don't even know who makes good ones these days.

Zones was the logical conclusion to FreeBSD jail work. They added the full features jails now has finished. Each zone getting its own IP stack for instance. Jails didn't have that in the beginning. It was written by one guy to simply o

I agree with you. But I think you're being generous when saying some of the subsystems and architecture are shockingly bad. Some of them are not even designed. If you look at them it's like "This isn't even useable!&qu

Personally, I think the government there is already guilty of criminal neglect in infrastructure in that country, if they go back to coal and petrol, people WILL start dropping like flies from all sorts of issues because of the air quality.

What other choice did they have if they deploy on Linux? Btrfs is the best Linux land has and its no zfs.

Illumos is the repo of record. Everyone of the above OS distributions feeds changes upstream keeping zfs in sync between platforms. No one relying on zfs wants forks or incompatibilities. That's one of zfs main selling points, that you

I think you think to highly of the btrfs group. There not bad people but Filesystems are HARD to get right and they simply are not in the same league as the zfs developers were. The well known raid 5 issue btrfs had shows a prime example th

Adrian could speak for himself but my guess is from what he has written in the past that he got his start by being mentored by one of the FreeBSD developers. FreeBSD is big on assigning mentors to those interested in developing for it. So i

A more complete lie you could not have stated. Check the FreeBSD commit logs. All those vendors commit code back to the project. I see commits almost everyday from them. But thanks for spewing lies.

It's not the that it NEEDS it, it's that if you DONT use it you are introducing potential data errors into an otherwise checksummed data path. Which would completely negate the rest of the path.
