It's funny, there were people saying this exact thing 20 years ago when people were demanding ala carte channel buying from cable companies. They were saying "yeah you are not going to like paying $x per channel." I was not o

You can only say that after you have tried a dry run of Tarsnap to see what your actual usage would be. You can't take the rate Colin charges at face value because that is not what you will actually wind up paying.

Actually... it kinda.. does. No? Don't pay your property tax. See how fast you get evicted from that home you "own" by the sheriff.

I think Sonos just lost me to Apple on yet another device. HomePod here I come. Seriously this is just another insane digital slavery drive.

I think you can charge for something and still go broke. Perhaps they grossly under charged for storage? Or storage + employees + ... Bad business are started all the time.

You can do a dry run with Tarsnap to see how much it would transfer and how much it would deduplicate before ever running for Realz(tm). Using the --dry-run flag.

I backup quite a bit and after deduplication with tarsnap it's not nearly as much.

GAH! How much are you storing in crash plan? 1000USD/mo seems a little insane. Is that after deduplication with tarsnap?

If I were the Linux camp, I would seriously look at the work required to port this to the kernel. Since they can't mainline zfs this may be their next best option. Not that they will look outside their echo chamber but they should.

Is there another auction site that addresses these issues better? Or is this just the nature of the beast?

Why would this be a better option than a simple zfs snapshot, zfs send/recv backup and recovery strategy?

I always get a case for my phones. They cost to much to leave unprotected imo. I use otter box cases. If that drop test is duplicated by a third party that would indeed be impressive. Thanks for answering my question.

I thought about that, but combined with EOL software updates its a little harder to justify just replacing the battery. Ive already had one app I can't download because the OS is too old. The OS runs a little slow on the 5's hardw

I'm still clinging to my iPhone 5. Im waiting patiently for the soon to be announced iPhone 8 and I am only buying the 8 because my poor 5 is starting to not hold a charge, and is totally out of space and OS updates have ended.

Genuine question, I am waiting for the soon to be announced iPhone 8, but what I am curious about is what is the selling point of this phone? The camera? Security? Why would I want this phone? I don't follow google or their employees c

I could argue the merits of the ringsize but it would be moot because it's being bumped to 10 in September. So I will just leave this here as a note that the argument that a ringsize of 3 is not very anonymous will be moot in September

+1 Monero does not have the problems Bitcoin has regarding privacy and anonymity. I also would much rather see it supported than Bitcoin.

Or using a coin designed to be anonymous and private, like.. Monero. You would still probably be on camera buying a Visa gift card in a retail store. With timestamp.

This to me, is one of the GREATEST advances since Unix was created. Seriously, how !@#!@# amazing is it to be able to yank a pool from illumos, Linux, FreeBSD etc and swap it into a box of another OS supporting ZFS and simply import it weth

Do you just buy pre made boxes? Im curious because I have never put boxes in service I did not spec and put together myself. For exactly this reason. You want to make sure the HW is supported by your OS. I didn't think anyone just gr

Yeah I somewhat understand the phrase "snapshots are not backups". But what really constitutes a "backup" ? Because I argue snapshots are backups. I snapshot a dataset. And use ZFS send/recv to a remote ZFS server o

I support your theory. For whatever that's worth. I've put some of my assets into Monero instead of other alt coins. When I researched the landscape of crypto currencies IMO Monero was best of breed regarding anonymity, privacy, a
