I backup (and chown) archives, not directly the files, so restoring the permissions isn't much of an issue. Sorry, was unclear :s

My quick and dirty way to it is to run a cron on the backup server that chowns incoming files to another user (with a few refinements, like preventing exec, etc). But I'd definitely like something more solid.

Note that the 32bit thing isn't completely a Linux issue. ZFS seems pretty much designed with 64bit in mind. On the Freebsd side, there is whole section on tuning [0] for i386 users. Some of it might transpose to linux (at least the concept

You can do both. And actually, since the charity fundraising in question[0], which had an initial goal of 20K$, is up to 160K$, my guess is that fueling this issue, giving it press, and making people excited/angry about it ends up, as a sid

The guy is a Professor and publishes textbooks. My guess is that he wants a way to force his own students to buy his book instead of copying it.

To expand on that: The second table on wazoox's link give the number of fatalities scaled to the population (in death per million) for European countries. It doesn't include the USA for some reason, but you can estimate it from Retric's inf

An alias is an additional static ip. And most routers try to minimize IP variations, but it's not perfect. Mine doesn't persist IP<->MAC associations when I reboot it.

Try to turn cookies off and see what still works. Some people still build sites that have basic functionality with JS off. Nobody bothers to do the same for cookies.

You probably haven't really seen the worse of Vista, to say that. My experience, that is matched by some other people around me, is that the difference is that 7 works pretty much out of the box, while Vista could make your computer unusabl

Generally, nothing forces one DNS to resolve to one ip and one ip to correspond to one DNS. So you're losing both a simple way to do load-balancing and virtual hosts. That being said, both can be worked around by other ways. You definitely

Both Hetzner and Kimsufi offer dedicated servers which are really in the same scale. The 49€ server, which is the top of the Kimsufi line and the bottom of the Hetzner line, are virtually the same server except one has 2To disk and 24G RAM,

Two thousand servers is nowhere near the scale of the average person wondering if they have to go in the cloud. And once people have reached that size, I hope they don't follow random blog advices. Before that, for anything that fits on les

I agree. "Photocopying" an object is still way more expensive than buying it. The price of machines, especially for plastic printing, can and will probably go down (1000$ seems high, I think the small ones are more in the 400/500 range righ

Instead of building for the existing community, they are trying to expand the toolset to "seduce" other communities. Both are perfectly worthy goals. Just different.

CS field in America is about as easy as it gets, in terms of finding a job. Demand is absurdly high. That's not the case for every field. That's not even true for CS, as soon as you get out of the country. The column is about someone in (ap

My Google searches actually fail very often. Outside of a few topics (programming and music, mainly), and excluding queries that lead me directly to Wikipedia, I'd say the success rate for "exploratory questions" (not "facebook home page")

You can't track the conversion rate from a TV ad either. That doesn't mean you can't notice a positive/negative effect related to the presence/absence of the ad. Especially at the scale of GM.

I guess it's more a question of local tradition than a question of which industry you're in. As far as I can gather, in Sweden unpaid internship are the norm. In France, the situation is a bit more mixed. Some people pay well, others pay th

A naive search shows you get a 1000 sq feet house for 2K$ in MV/Sunnyvale. If it's really true, that doesn't exactly sound a huge amount. Look at the rents in Paris or Stockholm, and imagine you're paid 50k$.
