I can’t speak to real life but if you want to read an enjoyable depiction of how society might react to novel currencies, check out Going Postal and Making Money by Terry Pratchett.

Agreed. For what it’s worth, I think street skaters should wear helmets most of the time. The 17ft drop is equivalent to the 80mph example in my post, and should definitely involve a helmet, gloves and impact padding (which can be worn unde

You wouldn’t generally exceed 15mph street skating. Competent downhill skaters can reach 50mph+, with world record speeds exceeding 80mph. That alone makes safety gear much more essential for downhill. In addition, if someone shows up to a

I was thinking you could use them to specialize the IO types to prevent accidentally calling the wrong type of function in the wrong place. Say you have a `ServerIO a` and `ClientIO a` type. Browser APIs, like addEventListener, would use th

Hiya, I wrote this gist. I do actually think Monads or similarly expressive type constructs would allow us to eliminate this class of issue for good. Hopefully the rise of Wasm makes this problem irrelevant for functional programmers, but t

This is a nice idea, but unfortunately my work involves helping customers with all sorts of stacks integrate our technologies. Rather than quit my job, it’s a bit easier to document and raise awareness about these issues. Unfortunate that y

Unfortunately that hasn’t been my experience. I learned about this problem after helping a very confused Remix user overcome this issue. I will give kudos to Remix for having a good docs page about this, something Next.js could do better (u

I’ve worked for half a dozen companies over the last decade as a programmer and I’ve never experienced this. Most of this article feels completely detached from reality for me. I suspect the author has only worked for the most dire of compa

As far as I can tell Covid-quality is still in full effect, to the point where I don’t watch movies on Netflix at all anymore. I often start one, remember the quality and then find an alternate source. I wonder if they’ve seen that it doesn

Disturbingly enough my ping is 32ms from Wellington to Sydney, and over 40ms to Christchurch, even though Christchurch is ~10x closer.

Why does it cost so much to get a taxi license? 100k EUR seems pretty steep.

There are other ways around the cost. They could build a distributed training system along the lines of Folding@Home, I’m sure a lot of AI folks would donate GPU time.

I definitely could have used some indoor navigation when trying to find stuff underground in Japan, like looking for T's TanTan in Tokyo Station (amazing ramen, try it if you get the chance). Took me a while to figure out it's act

Just a heads up the term meritocracy was actually coined to describe an impossibility, since all judgement of worth in society is subjective. Even if you pick an objective metric, it was decided upon subjectively and with bias. I can apprec
