The audacity you have to claim causality here is wild. I’m a geneticist and boy let me tell you that it is not easy to unravel causality. Even in the systems I’ve studied for years, I would never make claims like this.

In my opinion there’s a general fundamental misunderstanding on the purpose of theories. I see it all the time — attempts to explain why something is useful simply because it exists (re: popular science evolution). There are loads of subopt

I hear this kind of “it exists because it has to exist” thing from non-bioscience types a lot. Essentially, this is just a tautological statement.

Lately I’ve been noticing some very fast flickering when I type on Gnome terminal. Guess this coincides with the new terminal.

Likewise people with bigger feet are better at math. Well actually that’s just because infants have tiny feet and are notoriously terrible at math.

Sounds like you aren't trying to get the new issue resolved.

Make a donation now, then open an issue. If it’s an ROI problem, the return is getting the issue resolved.

I read these comments and was very confused for a good while; somehow I thought there was a new kind of cloud robot that vacuumed your SQL databases for you.

Same with European Portuguese, I can’t actually use Siri or any voice controlled software because I refuse to speak in Brazilian Portuguese. It is so unnatural (frankly I don’t know how), I would just prefer to speak English.

I know this was tongue-in-cheek, but I see it as a time investment — or an opportunity cost. If you’ve got gobs of money and just want content now, maybe it’s not worth your time to stay on top of all this subversion technology.

As a fifth year genetics PhD student, I found myself agreeing to mostly everything here. I also think the logic applies to those of us in the field! > Divergent Tasks are Hard to Evaluate and Reason About By “divergent” I mean loosely d

There’s almost certainly no way that we are more genetically related to plants than cephalopods. All sequencing and morphology data support that animalia is a monophyletic kingdom (diverged from one ancestor).

Wait what? Even when I ask my elderly Iraqi family friends how they are doing, they usually just skip over the “good” and just say “alhamdulillah”.

I always make this mistake too as a computational biologist; when talking about DNA it’s megabases not megabytes.

Thanks for sharing. This lines up so well with my experience as a translator in the ER — doctors are constantly catastrophizing and make it seem like everyone is going to die all the time and seemingly massively overtreat/overtest most

I got denied an internship at the CIA for my past drug use, which was entirely trying marijuana after it became legal in my home state. I don’t see how someone can possibly be expected to have the personality to gather (human) intel, but so

I agree, nobody wants to chat with anyone's Chatbot -- they typically just want to ask one or two questions. The word "chat" seems disparaging.

I speak Portuguese and just got back from Portugal with my anime-obsessed boss. It was endless embarrassment when I told him to say “obrigado” to thank people, but he just said “arigato” the whole week — even after dozens of corrections. I

I think the argument is clearly trite, .docx seems like a joke, and very more likely within the hundreds to thousands of years, people probably won’t even speak Finnish there anymore.
