I used to jailbreak. I now use Android. When I did jailbreak, it was never about apps and rarely about high-level features (I did use NC settings before that was an official thing, and I installed a torrent client and some emulators, I thin

Looking forward to getting mine. While I don't see this replacing my Android as a daily-driver anytime soon (and possibly never), I am very excited to have an unrestricted computer in my pocket :-) Especially once the pandemic gets u

I cannot disagree with a single word in that article. I would also go further and mandate that all general purpose computing devices should be forced to have an unlocked (or easily unlockable) boot loader so you can easily acquire full cont

I absolutely love that people work on this kind of stuff, but it all feels like an incredibly hacky workaround (running a server to reinstall an app every 7 days...) for functionality that should really be present out of the box (install wh

Whether you are advanced or not to do that doesn't matter. I am advanced enough to sideload applications via XCode. I have done so. I stopped doing it, because reinstalling every 7 days is an annoyance that no app was worth. I switched

The big difference is that you generally see more people who would find it useful to run arbitrary software on their phone than on their TV or smart fridge, especially considering that recent phones have single core performance approaching

Same here. I run Termux on my Pixel, but I also have an iPad and was really excited to when I installed iSH. I hoped their initial approval of iSH meant that Apple was becoming more liberal. Hell, I was even wondering if this would make it

Agreed in principle. Do you know any on-screen keyboard for mobile Linux that is as good as (or at least approached) Hacker's Keyboard on Android? I have a Librem 5 on pre-order, and am following PureOS and PinePhone related developmen

iSH is great, I have it on my iPad (my phone is a Pixel with Termux), but performance is atrocious due to the emulation. Maybe it's better on the most recent Apple SoCs, but on my iPad mini just opening a small text file in vim takes a

Primary: File management. I tend to prefer the command line for that kind of thing. Includes occasionally rsync-ing or scp-ing stuff to and from servers, and modding a few games I have on Android (Beamdog's Enhanced Edition mobile port

Could not agree more. There should be a "I know what I'm doing" switch that disables a bunch of restrictions and essentially enables full root privileges for your user.

It all depends on your personal definitions of 'shiny' and 'work' I suppose. Current GNU/Linux phones unfortunately don’t even clear the ‘work’ threshold for me, and are far from it. If current GNU/Linux phones

I love this. As a backer who will hopefully get my phone in the next few months - and who understands that the software is an ongoing piece of work - I am happy that I have the ability to put my money where my mouth is when it comes to aski

I can say with 100% certainty that I would never have backed that. I may not agree with everything about the Librem 5 (in particular I care much less about hardware openness and would prefer better performance + battery life), but the whole

I'm of two minds on this. Fundamentally, my opinion is that Apple (or any device manufacturer) should not be restricted what an end user can or cannot do with a device they own, and that includes restricting what software can be instal

The way to fix app "subscriptions" is not to charge more (or less) but to fix the customer-hostile structure of app "subscriptions". The big issue with app "subscriptions" is that they don't actually work

I'd really like an unbranded version with these (or better) specs, even at a slightly higher price (I don't particularly identify with any of the distros that have been released so far, not to say there is anything bad about them

As many others have said, I'll be interested once they provide local vault support on Linux. I dislike subscriptions - not for the financial cost as such, but because I like to evaluate whether or not I want to pay for a given version

That is a common misconception, but is actually not true. Source: I used to work at the Genius Bar, with a stint in APAC AppleCare Retail Service Operations, and have confirmed this very question on one occasion with superiors in the US App
