I disagree. The GPL is fundamentally an ideological document with an ideological purpose in a way that the BSD and MIT licenses are not.

How could there be? The current secular moral paradigm’s foundation is “consenting adults.” There’s no basis for opposing adults willingly betting or doing recreational drugs in that paradigm. All of the major moral paradigms that do provid

There are far too many confounds to draw a conclusion like "these tactics don't actually work." Speeding up police response to gunfire isn't going to have a measurable impact if the police aren't actually allowed to

The problem with category theory as it applies to programming is it's using a hydraulic press to crack eggs. Telling people about the power of hydraulic presses when they just want to make omelets is pretty unhelpful.

You are still claiming that crime is conserved. It's not possible, even likely, that a reduced cost-benefit for committing crime shifts preferences toward some non-criminal activity with a more attractive risk-reward profile?

I didn't realize that there's a conservation law for crime. Is this some kind of ingenious application of Noether's theorem that I haven't heard of?

The problem is Bayesian priors look an awful lot like racism to the unaided eye, enough so that it's really hard to justify them. Or maybe it's racism masquerading as a Bayesian prior. I don't see how to know for sure either

The sad thing is there’s no good reason not to have 100 year wood readily available. Suppose you have 100 acres. Every year you harvest one, replant it, and move on to the next. In a century you’ll have an annual harvest of excellent wood.

I also just sort of stopped drinking. I don't consider myself a non-drinker, it's just, well, whenever the opportunity arises I consider it and decide I prefer not to mess up my sleep and feel lousy the next day for an experience

It's rather striking that a dollar today is worth considerably less than a penny when this was written, at least with respect to grooming services.

Somewhat strangely, this makes me think of something Dijkstra wrote[1]: Technology is expert at inflicting radical novelties upon mankind. Nuclear weapons and the pill are examples from the last 50 years; so is in my opinion the automat

The only asset the loan originator has as a result of this transaction is the loan itself and it has an equal and opposite offsetting liability for the deposit that was created along with the loan. Banks don't liquidate assets to get &

The real asset and the financial asset are accounted for separately. That’s why a bank can sell your mortgage without selling your house.

Because the banking sector in aggregate holds the payment system hostage. The issue isn’t that the bank will lose money, it’s that you won’t be able to buy things and pay for utilities if banks can’t clear payments.

Which leads to the wonderful question: why are there any contingent things? And: why are the contingent things that there are as complex as they are? I don't know of any plausible naturalist explanation besides Many-Worlds. And that su

This shows what people mean when they say Emacs is easy to extend. I don’t think most popular editors will let you code an extension like this in 167 lines including all boilerplate, comments, and documentation.
