The reason why editors stagnate is more like this: Wikipedia will die because noone real can contribute. Write a new article and it will be shot down. Write an article about important programming languages and it will be killed with some st

I compared Amazon to rented servers (monthly cancelation possible) one year ago, and even if you have spike traffic, you need to deep dive into cost to find out if cloud is cheaper for you. It wasn't for me. http://codemonkeyism.com/dark-s

One has to ask, why don't they upload hashes? This would be sufficient to check for friends (email, telephone). Why do they upload real data? Do they sell it? What happens when they go bankrupt?

As others have pointed out elsewhere, Facebook is in it's 8th year, Google was in it's 5th year. Google has a much faster growth attributable to larger revenues in the beginning than Facebook, percentage growth seems to be the same. (Update

I'm using Hetzner for 10years, with very very few major problems (I only remember 1). I compared them some time ago to EC2 pricewise: http://codemonkeyism.com/dark-side-virtualized-servers-cloud... And setup of a new server is quite fast

This made them a ton of customers who read the label as everyone else, felt pressured and bought the ticket [ ]. [ ] Not that I endorse that practice.

They won't change the interface, as it works for them. When deciding between being shady and getting more money, and being honest and getting less money, they already chose their side.

Poker is - in that sense - not gambling. The comparison as far as I understand it is between social games and slot machine. The link says that the democraphic is primarily female, so "The Facebook crowd is far more casual, far more female,

According to some, Zygna is not targeting casual gamers but casual gamblers (same motivations, same demographic) There was a discussion about that on HN some days ago: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=3453040

If you write books for the money, you're doing something wrong. Writing code for the same amount of time will make you much more money. Writing tech books is for advancing your career, get consulting gigs, get invited to conferences etc. Th

My Chrome is getting buggier all the time (now in version 15). Tabs hang, websites crash. So to be selfish: Instead of adding a terminal emulator, I want my Chrome from 2 years ago back, which was fast, bug free and did not hang.

I've raised this issue one year ago http://codemonkeyism.com/scala-unfit-development/ There are two forces at play here: a.) Binary fragility of Scala b.) A community that upgrades libraries (your dependencies) to every new RC candidate -

I stand by my comment. When you launch in the UK you should write "Twilio Launches in UK instead of "Twilio Launches in Europe". Same as for "Twilio Launches in Chile" instead of "Twilio Launches in America" when you launch in Chile.

Just looked the other way for a tiny moment and Europe is equalled with the UK. But perhaps from 501 Folsom St. Third Floor San Francisco California 94105 Europe looks so awfully far away, that one can only see the UK.

After 15 years of Java and a proponent of Java APIs I'm no longer sure this standard APIs are a good idea. 1. Most of them are leaky abstractions 2. If you use them, you should nevertheless shield yourself from them (See Uncle Bob), so you
