Not sure how C changed in the last 20 years, but back then, C was a pain to develop, pain to debug, pain to maintain - yes I loved it though. I'm also not sure I'd compare it to Clojure and suggest it as a better tool for this job.

Take a look at the ring buffer data structure from the LMAX architecture (my talk on LMAX http://codemonkeyism.com/lmax-architecture-high-performance-... or http://martinfowler.com/articles/lmax.html from Martin Fowler). They have incom

Events can either mean single-thread/event queue (like the LMAX architecture), or async/sleeping with wake up on event trigger. Or both. Poll usually is run with threads on incoming connections/work, while epoll is keeping conections sleepi

Really not sure, why someone voted this down? The only open experiments on the issue of threads vs. events - at least I don't know of any other.

Thought this was the definitive blog post on the issue: http://sheddingbikes.com/posts/1280829388.html "epoll is faster than poll when the active/total FD ratio is < 0.6, but poll is faster than epoll when the active/total ratio is &#

Checked exceptions are fine. The problem is, that they are not composable and most languages have no syntactic sugar for dealing with them as Monads. Other checked error mechanisms like Either or are much easier to manage. I do hope e.g. Ja

As everyone has an opinion, here is mine: From teaching programming, my take away is LOGO works best as a first programming language. The visual feedback helps with understanding commands, procedures/functions, breaking down larger problems

I don't think this has anything to do with Ruby (dynamic) or Haskell (static). Scala is a dll hell b/c of binary incompatibility and a community that wants all frameworks on bleeding edge Scala (RC even) versions. Compared to Java, where ma

The reason for economic growth in Germany and the crisis in parts of Europe can easily be found in the first graph: http://www.voxeu.org/index.php?q=node/7536 (Google unit labor costs for more sources)

Again, this is not what happened. e.g. see here http://www.voxeu.org/index.php?q=node/7536 Unit labor costs in Germany increased 5% (essentially was flat) from 2000 to 2011, Greece costs increased 40%, Spain 30%, Italy 30%. The graph very

Yes it is out of sync b/c Germany cut costs in the 2000, cut social security, changed job laws, increased the minimum pension age etc while the southern countries increased spending and increased massively labor costs.

I'm biased, I'm German. But last year I think there was an article linked that explained how Germans have more productivity output per year than US Americans, although Germans have more holidays. Said that, it's obviously a generalization.

A limited number of threads will not scale as real async wake-on-data connections will scale. If demand is higher than your thread pool, for the use case that you're web response builds on async backend requests, your site will be down.

There is no async MySDQL JDBC driver. If you encapsulate it in an async layer, you need to keep a thread for the connection.
