Lets look at PHP a little bit. It made moving from a static site of just html files to a slightly dynamic site dead simple, just rename the file .php, and add in a few <php? blocks. And then it was deployable with just ftp, which helpe

No, there is a meaningful difference [1]. Free (as in freedom) Software guarantees that the end user can always get, modify, and redistribute the source, by requiring any use of the source code to be under the same license. In short, copyl

What kind of things do you have in mind? Once you know how to study and want to learn, there's a whole internet full of knowledge. Before, things like access to a fancy library, or labs would definitely boost productivity for a succes

I wonder what the data says for people with "Tiger moms", even if they are first generation college students. Is that level of encouragement helpful, in comparison?

The larger difference is what happens after a test is failed and a student is feeling down. It seems that the more affluent group has more "identity formation" in that they know that they belong at college, whereas the more at ri

Well, in the article, it does say that after the mind-set intervention was applied to all the student (minus the control group), the gap between the at risk group and the affluent group cut in half, as the affluent group's drop out rat

As for quantum entanglement, it's not going to help. Think of it like a pair of dice that always sum to 7 when they are independently rolled. Yes, that requires spooky action at a distance, but no, you can't transmit information

It's a bit dead now, but there is a great little Pascal derived language called Turing used in Ontario schools. It is shipped as this one exe which is a text editor as well as running the code with F1, and docs on F8-10. It made it su

I think this is a good change. Consider a program like this [one][1]: fn mutter( x : ~int ) -> ~int { let mut y = x; *y = 24; return y; } fn main() { let y = box 42; let x = mutter(

I do prefer Racket macros to Template Haskell, but you can do some of the same kind of things in Template Haskell. Go ahead and play with it for it for a bit. Mostly, you need to have the data-structure it defines for the parse tree, and i

I feel like in discrete mathematics (especially combinatorics), since we don't use continuous functions, it's useful to say 0^0 is 1, along with 0! = 1, and so on. Makes a lot of things around Binomial theorem and the like easier

When you git clone a repository with a submodule, before you call git submodule sync/update and all that jazz, you just have an empty directory where the submodule should be.
