You can pay attention to politics, you can do politics without necessarily following obsessively every little happenstance of things. Once you know some politician is a racist crook, you don't need a reminder every day. You especially

You know who definitely agrees with you ? Linguists who specialize in conversational analysis, multimodal discourse analysis and interactional sociolinguistics. It makes me kind of sad when people assume that "Chomsky's work = the

Actually human languages are much better suited for all kinds of communication : To the best of our knowledge, most animal systems of communication don't allow reference to either the speaker (i.e "I"), the hearer (i.e "

Neurons are constantly being replaced Are they ? As far as I know, neurons last more or less from before birth to death. There is neurogenesis in the hippocampus but it doesn't replace existing neurons, and the new cells themselves l

I agree that however hateful and ridiculous he gets, Trump is not a nazi. I roll my eyes whenever someone calls him a nazi or implies he is a nazi. For example, this guy : https://twitter.com/paulg/status/785769454

I disagree completely with you on this. Nazi violence was just as much a product of culture and social forces than Aztec violence, it's merely much closer to home and we know a lot more about it. I think this 'outlier excuse'

Well I thought Viet Nam was a more clear cut example of America being barbarous but yeah, Iraq works as well, let's not forget Abu Ghraib. Anyway, as far as I know, although my country has committed its share of horrible massacres arou

We often hear about that kind of thing happening, but it is rare to see a specific example going into details and making specific accusations towards a specific person.

I could never find a reliable source for this oft-quoted remark about Object-Oriented Programming. As far as I know, Dijkstra never said this, not in this exact phrasing anyway.

It all depend on what you count as connotation, but I'd argue that if anything can be expressed verbally, then it can be translated. There is no such thing as untranslatability.

Weirdness of a language is completely subjective, and easyness too. Overall, the intrinsic qualities of a language matter little if at all in driving its adoption.

I'm quite pessimistic concerning the future of multilingualism. Small, isolated communities manage to preserve their language for century, but a community the same size in a big city can lose its language in the space of a generation
