In case anyone wants it, here's my unicode-friendly fork of jQuery Hotkeys: https://github.com/TrevorBurnham/jquery.hotkeys Note that because of the way the library works, you can only use the unicode equivalents on this fork—aliases li

CoffeeScript and Node.js get along fantastically. When the "coffee-script" library is loaded, you can even "require('foo.coffee')" directly, making it easy to mix-and-match JavaScript and CoffeeScript files. Sam Stephenson, the creator of P

Some nice examples, if a bit unfair since the JS is clearly compiled from the CoffeeScript rather than hand-coded. In fact, the last example reveals a bug in CoffeeScript—the function (x, y) -> for game_piece in @game_pieces

Most of these are small utilities (e.g. node-mkdirp), but a few are really significant contributions to the Node community. node-bigint, for instance, is a very robust, efficient library for doing infinite-precision arithmetic (a fairly com

True. I'd argue that it's the best of both worlds: Unlike Java, you have access to a bunch of helpful functions on every primitive, and you can add more by modifying prototypes; and unlike Ruby, primitives are immutable, which puts a cap on

I think Github's issue tracker is the best around, now that search actually works. Very lightweight, and the integration with commits and pull requests is really nice. dhh doesn't sound like he was ever a fan of Lighthouse: https://twitter

True. Incidentally, for those who are curious, the three patents used against Fototime (as well as more established companies like Flickr) can be found at http://www.google.com/patents?id=uiAPAAAAEBAJ , http://www.google.com/patents?id=0J

I think the idea is that if the company is successful enough to have grown to 25 employees, it stands a better chance of having access to competent legal counsel and other resources. The penalty might be bigger in monetary terms, but smalle

The recent This American Life ep "When Patents Attack" ( http://www.thisamericanlife.org/radio-archives/episode/441/w... ) started with a segment on a startup called Fototime, which was very small (certainly under 25 people) and had to sett

This article rings very true to me. I applied to YC in Summer 2010 with two fellow grad students I picked by sending out a "founders wanted" email, then meeting each of them for lunch. We got invited to interview, but weren't accepted. So w

The link to "Directed Edge's successful application video" at http://ycombinator.com/video.html points to http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=855057 , which in turn leads to a 404. The video can, however, be found at http://scotchi.post

Ah, my bad. I didn't catch the line "if (tagName == 'INPUT' || tagName == 'SELECT' || tagName == 'TEXTAREA') return;", which is indeed a sensible default.

Hmm. Binds all events to `document`, which means that if you type something in a text field, it'll still trigger the event. (One of the TODOs is "Make behavior with INPUT / SELECT / TEXTAREA configurable.) Thing is, jQuery Hotkeys ( https:/

One thing no one has mentioned is Yelp. Yelp is huge for yoga. If your yoga studio doesn't have any reviews on Yelp, a lot of people are going to be hesitant to pony up $15 just to try one class. (Many studios offer a discount for new stu

That's really startling. Is this something Groupon employees are expressly paid to do? Is that one reason why their costs are so high?

I've actually had this experience: My favorite yoga studio, where I was going 3-4 times per week, did a Groupon; suddenly the room was packed and there was less space to move around in. It would have made sense for the studio to do the Grou

A precondition of L'Hôpital's Rule is that the limit in question exists. So: Prove that the limit exists, and then you can bust out L'Hôpital's Rule to prove that it's 1.

And the cleverest student turns out to be right, given the convention asserted by the mathematician. If 0⁰ were 0, or indeterminate, then the limit wouldn't exist and, therefore, L'Hôpital's Rule wouldn't apply. But given that it's 1, the l

This has been around for a while. It's still not 100% reliable (for instance, it simply converts the JavaScript `a == b` to the CoffeeScript `a == b`, which is equivalent to JavaScript's `a === b`), but it's astonishingly good in many cases
