If you want to turn it into an app, ever, go with drupal. You're more familiar with WP, so use that as the default unless the "friend" can give you a list of concrete reasons to go with drupal. When it all comes down to brass tacks, use wh

Have you just been looking passively, or have companies told you that you're unqualified for postings? I went through a similar situation at work, and decided to interview for a few positions. The "senior" position listings were definitel

I use a hybrid, depending on where I'm working. Sometimes I use Gmail Tasks, for high level "don't want to forget about this thing.." tasks. At home I generally use paper / pen. At work I use notepad.

My (bootstrapping) startup took a smallish f&f round. We took the money in the form of a convertible loan, which means that it can be converted to stock or repaid (as a normal loan would) at a certain date. This got us the money easily

I'd always assumed this was a common teaching. I saw it repeatedly in my undergrad CS days, and even saw it in some AP high school classes.

I think the opposite. Data is just raw, information is one level abstracted, and knowledge is the next step (information + expertise). Data technologies -> information technologies -> knowledge technologies. In the music example, d

It's not going to help you solve any underlying problems, but it will at least lead you to one big conclusion: sex doesn't have to be a big deal. You'll do it, realize, "hey, that was fun... but not as big of a deal as I thought." That isn

Salesforce has never particularly impressed me. But by far the worst UI has to be the Authorize.net one. It is absolutely miserable. And they're HUGE, and super high profile. Why can't they have a decent site? Godaddy's upselling isn't r

I've actually got a manuscript at a journal right now. I'm a CS guy, but I work in public health, so my paper is going to be in an epi journal. It was some work (2 years worth) on analyzing open ended text responses (you know, at the end

Seems like most comments here talk about the "intuitive" aspects of the design. Which I agree with -- an app should ideally be intuitive. That said, being intuitive really only is an issue during the user's learning curve. As every vi/ema

Yup, there is a labs item to customize your shortcuts. I couldn't use Gmail without them, for the most part. It's not a great visual UI, but the workflows behind it are amazing. It's kinda like emacs in that aspect, I suppose...

Replying to myself with a clarification: there are cases where people have allergies to the flu shot. But that's going to be about the limit of negative reactions. It's safe.

There is no reason to not get the shot. I work in public health, with a lot of really smart folks who are both educated and well meaning. Don't trust me -- there is no science of a convincing magnitude that says flu shots are bad. The on

I also use the header() call to send an HTTP response code. Most of the time, I want my users to be able to retrieve the information on that page later (say it's an order number / summary / etc.) Lots of people will copy the URL in their

There is some research to show that a "real world feel" is a critical component of a website (from the "What makes a website credible" study from a few years back. Having a picture of you will go some ways towards doing that. I put my pic

My startup has used twitter really effectively the past few months to do a few things. 1) Drive traffic to our blog, 2) drive people with a need for our service, to our service Of course, we're a b2b targeted at engineers / sales guys, so

I understand where everybody is coming from when they say that salary + 5% is very generous. Really, I do. However, I would caution OP to consider the following two (which it sounds like he has, at least for item 2 below). First, biggest

My plate is so full these days that I won't use a new site / service unless I can consume via RSS. Didn't seem to find a feed on the page, which makes it effectively inaccessible for me.

#4 is most applicable to me. I'm always one bug fix away from releasing a new version, but don't manage to release often enough. IMVU runs a great blog (startup lessons learned) that you should read regularly if you operate a web startup.

You also need to evaluate how good your data is. Do you have confidence that people "recommending" teachers will input their names correctly, and not put in "John McPeebrain Doe". If you scrape data, be careful of that as well. You can ea

Don't know how good it is, but a quick google returned http://www.mechanicratingz.com/ The fact that ratings endz with a Zed makes me doubt it's any good. I've seen one or two others, one was a web2.0 type. Can't find it now, though.
