Before I accept that as truth, I want to see how things work in countries without sex offender list in term of recidivism. The kind of sexual of behaviors that should end up on the list (because there is no possible way that it could be fix

My X220, bought for $110 on eBay, came with a horrible TN LCD panel. Cost me around $70(?) to replace it with an IPS panel.

Having to go back 15 years for an example is usually a good predictor of the strength (or better: weakness) of an argument. The numbering has been very logical for more than a decade: you have a product generation, and increasing numbers me

By naming it 1660 instead of 2050, there is a lot more distance between the RTX/tensor core enabled products and those that are not. So a win?

You could make the same argument for almost any regulation. And we'd all be worse for it.

You initially explicitly mentioning capitalism as a system where work as a way of providing meaning is a false premise. Do you have any systems in mind where work exists to provide meaning? I have the impression that you are arguing as work

And yet, when I look around me I see a bunch of older colleagues, some of them older than 65, who rode the same wave from smallish to a pretty big company. Like me, they could afford to not work anymore, but they keep on working anyway. The

My standard way to think about stuff like that is to extrapolate to infinity: even if your tail wind were infinite and you’d arrive in 0 time, your way back would have infinite headwind and you’d never make it back. Conclusion: increased wi

I played a couple of hours of some Lego 3D game with game streaming and latency wasn't an issue at all. There are many games out there that don't require twitch reactions. Many years ago, when the Netflix CEO said that they'd

First of all: I'm not taking sides any way or the other. I was simply annoyed by your straw man ways of making an argument. The one where you claim that OP is being fine with having 1000x more money than this guy, but not 100x less tha

You're combining numbers that should be used in isolation. In a hypothetical world where the richest are only 10x richer than the other across the world , your $712 vs $62k data comparison simply doesn't exist. Ultimately, my bee

The cost of compression is very small for low performance designs (single instruction in-order issue). It's very straightforward to implement. It gets harder for more complex designs though. But for cases where you want to replace a Co

This was discussed just a couple of days ago here as well, so I'll just link to one of my comments there: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=19119398 So the answer is: it really depends. I think RISC-V will quickly i

This used to work in the past in the US. But last 5 years or so, every single time I've asked this with major carriers in the US, I've been quoted similarly high change fees as well.

Feel free to point out where the Wikipedia says that it helps with triangulation. (Hint: it does not.) The parent commenter explicitly write "A-GPS which uses triangulation". That is simply not true.

At least ARM smartened up on that one with the Cortex M0 and M3 DesignStart license, which requires no up front fee and you can just download the code for evaluation. Probably still a good idea to have a lawyer read things over...

aGPS has nothing to do with cell tower triangulation. With aGPS, the cell phones can download up to date GPS almanac from the tower instead of having to lock to GPS satellites to get it.
