False--price is largely dictated by what new users (who can't afford to buy a new device) are willing to pay, not what the seller (who used the device) wants.

But using `(` in vim to move the cursor backwards by a sentence is probably better than using a mouse--which involves locating the previous sentence, locating the mouse, locating the mouse cursor, moving it to the spot, and clicking.

Slightly OT, but does anyone know of any CL conferences in the US? Google has failed me so far.

>then load Facebook and observe how fast it feels Considering the scale of the problem, you're right--it's impressively responsive. But I'd still hesitate to call it fast--on almost every visit, I'll have pictures that won't load, "like

Thanks for the advice (I'm assuming it applies to me too). I've spent the past year getting really interested in Lisp (I just finished my senior year of high school, in which I took Lisp as an independent study). For a science fair, I got i

That's a separate issue. The article, IMHO, both maligns the MIT hackers (saying they were more malicious than they were) and then draws incorrect parallels between the MIT hackers of then and the hackers/crackers of today.

That's hardly fair to the MIT hackers. Hacking != phreaking. Hacking ∉ inherently malicious acts. Any legally-questionable thing the MIT hackers did was either because a) They were really fascinated in the system (the phone hacks they did

I agree with everything fugoki said, but here are some more observations: * Can't middle-click results to open in new tab (Chrome / Windows XP...if I remember I'll check it out on my laptop (Linux) when I can). * Dropdown for "Show 10/20...

If Google wins, hardware will be secondary, and Apple--that thrives on selling hardware--will decline. And it's possible that that will happen...it's also possible that it won't. Apple isn't destined to lose anything. It's just that they

Startup idea: 1. Buy cheap netbooks. 2. Dual-boot ChromiumOS with them. 3. Advertise that they can do all the cool Chromebook tricks...and also boot into a full-fledged OS to do other stuff. 4. Sell them for less than a Chromebook--say $300

I can't decide if I'm happy or not that non-coding skills can leave such an impression. I'm still at my first job (I'm only a HS senior), and for the interview I was asked to bring in some code. I brought my laptop, whose splash screen prou

I started watching the first video, and it said "Check out the remake". "Okay," I say, "if it's better, why isn't it on the main site? If it's not better...why is it so prominent?" And then it turned out that both videos were, in a word, aw

I recently spent $50 on eBay to get an old Pentium II "ultraportable" laptop. It's very thin, has an acceptable screen size and resolution (1024x768), a keyboard bested only by my ThinkPad, and is fantastic for the two things I'm using it f

Previous plans for the summer: 1. Work hard at job as Java dev (yes, it's not ideal, no, as a high school senior I'm not complaining). 2. Read PAIP; do all exercises. Current plans: 1. Drop everything and figure out how the heck non-static

There are machines that accept a stack of (unbound) paper and OCR it all. There's no "batch mode" for Kindle (apart from cracking the DRM, but that's a separate issue).
