I'm still using an iPhone XS (2018) and have zero complaints aside from a lack of RAM. I plan to upgrade this year, so it will come out to $200/year. Seems like a good deal.

Primitive graphics accelerators are exactly why console games were much more advanced and fluid for a long time. PCs staggered on thanks to much faster 32-bit CPUs, but they didn't really pull ahead until 3D cards became the norm towar

One cool feature that Twitter briefly had, way back when, was the ability to see the feed of another user. Like, construct a feed of all the accounts this person is following, since it's all public information anyway. It was a great wa

Top-level speedrunners of action games are definitely able to feel input lag changes on the order of 10-20ms. For everyone else, you'd really want to prove it with a high-speed camera or something.

This really nicely echoes a response to Eliezer Yudkowsky that I saw: if you always just play the odds on stuff like this, you're gonna be wrong about the real breakthroughs, which by definition defy the odds. There are plenty of reaso

I think it'd be more fun to spend an extra $700 and get an M2 Ultra Mac Studio with way more GPU cores and 128GB of RAM, and set up a private server. But if you really want a portable offline thing, sure.

It's fine, it doesn't ping anybody. Unless you're doing something embarrassing or spammy, I doubt anyone cares. I like being able to see how an issue affects other projects, that can be useful information.

Their VS Code demo question ("Do we use tabs or spaces?") is a clever one, but then it's just pulling from an answer on their Q&A site. Not particularly impressive in an AI sense. The Copilot Chat beta is able to answer t

All the amateur debunking just smells like the usual confidently incorrect contrarianism, which is always popular on sites like Reddit. There's just way too much going on for this to be a sloppy mistake. It's either real or a frau

Buying a high-end gaming GPU also lets you do, well, high-end gaming, 3D and video renders, etc. If you only care about ML stuff, sure, the calculation is different.

Even on Windows, you can do practically anything with a signed driver. There's just no such thing as verifying a "secure environment" outside of extremely narrow, controlled scenarios.

Google could have designed and licensed Android in such a way that devices would receive direct OS updates, with the manufacturer's custom garbage as a strictly separate layer on top of that. It's not a trivial challenge, but it&#

I looked up the last Android phone I owned: a Galaxy Nexus (2011), which shipped with 4.0, and stopped receiving OS updates after 4.3. Which is pretty much why I stopped using Android. I think Google is doing a better job of supporting thei

It is really funny how the official Vulkan tutorial is hundreds of lines of code just to display a dang triangle. It's all justifiable of course, and Vulkan actually isn't too bad if you just want to push your own vertices within

Reverse engineering is not onerously difficult if you have the right tools, some experience, and a decent grasp of assembly language. It's only really annoying if you can't use a debugger.

We're long overdue for a "digital property" law that defines specific rights around purchasing media, for consistency if nothing else. To my knowledge no country is seriously working on this, which is a bit surprising.

Purely subjective, but New Age-y stuff had a bit of a renaissance in the 90s, then fell off around 2000 - 2016ish, and now in recent years astrology in particular is back in a big way. What's new is that a lot of the recent interest in
