Yeah I can't think of a single case where any city deliberately and successfully discouraged tourism to a significant extent. It's possible to do by like, jacking up hotel taxes 100x, but nobody actually does that. Maybe some li

Once you have the basic concept of a filesystem, mapping names to chunks of data, I think directories are a natural extension. It's an aid to both the human and the computer.

Eco himself joked that Brown was one of his "Diabolicals". But I agree, they're radically different books which bear no comparison aside from the theme of secret societies. I adore Foucault's Pendulum, it's one of m

"Please leave now" sounds like terrible UX, especially if you've gone off to eat somewhere while your vehicle charges. Most of the time, the vast majority of your charging should be at home. For edge cases like this, well, it

AI-generated porn is a weird hobby with some very vocal supporters. Everyone else is pretty happy with real porn or rule34 or certain artists with Patreons. People use Stable Diffusion because it's free. I don't really want to pay

The only reason people think smoking "looks cool" is because of decades of aggressive advertising from cigarette companies, which seeped into the culture.

I wish Copilot did something like this. I've found it'll regularly invent C# methods which don't exist, an error which seems trivial to catch and hide from the user. No output is better than bad output.

I've found it extremely similar to IntelliCode for C#, which is not very impressive. Surprisingly I've found it does a better job of writing accurate comments than generating useful code. Maybe it's good for some languages, o

Do you need to install software really quickly? Performance is nice, but I understand why it's a low priority. I guess it can save you a few billable minutes with CI runners, but otherwise speed probably isn't a huge deal for most

Given that they were originally cranking episodes out in less than a week, yeah probably. I remember being astonished when their Elian Gonzalez episode aired four days after the raid, directly referencing it.

Does Apple do general-purpose web APIs? The only one I can think of is WeatherKit. Seems like any AI stuff will be designed to add value to its hardware exclusively, probably in conjunction with its on-device Neural Engine (tm).

I watched the WWDC session with the guy from Unity, and it's pretty clear that the Vision Pro will be a fully capable VR gaming platform, with good hand tracking. So it's an interesting choice from Apple to totally avoid the subje

I can't imagine that America's byzantine visa system is accomplishing any useful policy goal, it's just a mess. Compare to a country like Germany, where you can get a work visa, extend it indefinitely, and then roll it over i

It's gonna be really funny if we've looped all the way back to the Yahoo Directory circa 1998. It's hard to argue against the basic idea of human curation as a necessary component. I'm envisioning something like a search

We already have plenty of non-AI autogenerated spam which is apparently good enough to please Google, LLMs just make that slightly better. So the scale already exists, and we're really just talking about quality.

If the stuff you're doing allows a design where you can just loop over POD, sure, that's the ideal. But lots of stuff isn't that simple, and you end up messily reinventing inheritance with a lot of switches and if statements.

It's a pointer to a chunk of memory which contains an array of characters. You pass around the pointer because copying an array is expensive and wasteful. I think (or hope) the concepts are pretty clear if you understand what a pointer

Much like Theranos, basic immutable laws of nature make the whole idea absurd. Namely, that it requires a ton of energy to keep an object aloft. It's just wildly inefficient, and will never see serious usage outside of tiny niches. Not

I was just looking into this issue myself, to see how long I'd realistically have to keep shipping chunky universal binaries. I can imagine that Apple drops Intel support in say macOS 16, but keeps patching macOS 15 for a good long whi

Windows for ARM64 runs just fine, and has its own x86 emulation layer. There are scenarios where you genuinely need Intel hardware (running x86-64 binary drivers, I guess), but it's a pretty small subset.

Nobody under 35 wants to use email for anything. I'm older than that and I certainly don't want the hassle of setting up a mailing list. You can make a Discord server with a few clicks.
